ptp links 5km 16km 21km

Tue Jul 08, 2014 1:43 am

We are moving closer to setting up some links in Ireland and just wanted some more advice.

We have Base A which has 1Gbps fibre link.

We want to send 100Mbps to 150Mbps to Highsite B which is about 4.5km away

Then send connectivity to Home C 16km from Highsite B and Home D 21km from Highsite B, both are within 20 degrees of each other when sighted from Highsite B as shown in the very basic drawing :manhappy:

We want as much speed as possibly at the homes but ideally close to 50 Mbps true tcp speeds. LOS looks good for all sites with possibly 2 trees to remove near Home D.

I was looking at UBNT kit with two nanobeams M5 400 for the link from Base A to Highsite B then Rocket M with 90 sector and Rockets at both homes or is using a sector at 21km going to be too weak and do we need two PTP links to the homes which would leave us with 3 devices at Highsite B?

But I'm led to believe I can achieve better results with Mikrotik gear?

Any advice welcome

Hello, i recommend only PtP for these distances. If you need around 100 Mbit/sec tcp speed, you need 2*2 antennas.
I read about here RB911G is a good choice for 5, 16, 21 km.This is a powerful device.
I think for 5 km will be enough 24dBi Jirous JRC-24EX MIMO.
For 16 and 21 km you need at least 28-30 dBi like Ubiquiti Rocket Dish or Jirous JRC-29EX MIMO.
I know they are not cheap, but Jirous and Ubiquiti Rocket are good quality.
So many people said to me a good shielded box is a good choice as well.
Of course everything depending on your budget.
I am not an expert, just try to develope my network knowledge. If i would be in your case, i would rather use OSPF.

According to calculator:

5 km, RB 911G with Jirous 24 dBi:this should be around -60 dBm signal strenght, i think this is perfect for backbone network.
16 km, 21km RB 911G with Jirous 29 dBi or Rocket Dish 28-30 dBi: this should be around -60-65 dBm.

According to my experience -60-70 dBm and 30-40 dB SNR are a good results to achieve properly speed.
So if you have perfect line of sight and the fresnel zone is around 100% clear, you have a chance to achive 100 Mbit/sec, and depending on the other frequencies interference.

Sorry my english is not something good.

Hello, i made a test again, this is my best result so far.

Test equipment: RB 951, RB 750GL, RB 411GL
On my Ubuntu 12.04 running a Proftp server, so this speed is TCP.
On all RB running OSPF. Between RB 951 and RB 411GL there is 2.4 Ghz connection at the moment.
I just wanted to show you that devices capable of what you are looking for.
