Connect 2.4Ghz Grid Antenna to 5Ghz RB433

Sat Jul 12, 2014 1:07 pm

Hello,
I was using RB433 with 2.4Ghz Grid antenna, now I have to use the same hardware in other location as p2p in 5Ghz,
Can I use same 2.4Ghz Antenna with RB433, for point to point 5Ghz link

Just to be clear: no. Use 5GHz antenna for that.

FWIW, I had a tower climber do this on accident. The signal was was considerably lower than expected, but the link did work.

Electrically speaking, the antenna will work (it puts the appropriate load on the transmitter), but you will never get the performance you would otherwise expect to get, as it's not tuned for that frequency.

Rextended : not so many times I would like.

Troy : utp is also wire but using it for ac high voltage is not recommended. Everyone has to count with others also, at least not to make unnecessary noise and deal with local regulations if any. Therefore my NO.

If you do that this blow up your radio card.

SWR (standing wave ratio) is to high and that can blow up your radio card
And you have not the full performance from the antenna.
The antenna is built according to the frequency properties.Otherwise it does not work well

In that case, shall I use 2.4Ghz for my new p2p link as I want to use the existing infrastructure.

distance of the p2p links are 1 km and 2 km

May i ask why 2.4 GHz?
I give you advice use 5 GHz Point to point links the results in better performance.

I know that 5Ghz is best option, but I need to utilize my spare 2.4Ghz Grid Antennas.
In case of 5Ghz link, I have to procure new antennas,

I also grids, I use this only for site survey.
No longer able to build point to point links.
The grids are old, there are better things available.

@speaksandeep so many people told you this is not a good idea and you still insist on doing it.

@Jarda, I never said I would recommend it, just that it would work (however poorly).

@plisken, you're right, the SWR is too high, but didn't not consider that this would damage the radio, was only thinking from a tuning aspect.

I also didn't say that utp could not lead high voltage. We all know that it could, especially in the cases we don't want to ☺. Everyone has his destiny in his hands.

I've got a lot of dual band cards on single band antennas.

The only thing I've been able to do with them is scan to see what the rx strength is from my other devices on the tower. In my experience they won't even connect.

If you really have to make use of antennas that you have rather than antennas that were made to do the job no one is going to stop you.

You also won't get much help from the forum when the link doesn't behave as you think it should.
