RB2011 (wifi) performance

Mon Aug 24, 2015 10:42 pm

Hello! We've started a free comunity providing free wifi for people. We've had lots of tests and lots of MT boards, and lots of confusions. We're bunch of geeks, who likes comfort of internet in every corner. We're covering concerts, events and other locations with free wifi.

At right this moment, I'm testing RB2011UAS-2Hnd, and I'm issuing poor wifi performance. At right this moment I'm on 200m/200m uplink. ETH speedtest is OK. I get 200/200 +-10% (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4607651511). On my ISP's wifi router/modem it works about 100/100 (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4607640392).

I've tried different settings, now I'm at this
/interface wireless
set [ find default-name=wlan1 ] ampdu-priorities=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 \
    antenna-gain=5 band=2ghz-onlyn channel-width=20/40mhz-Ce country=slovenia \
    dfs-mode=no-radar-detect disabled=no frequency=2422 frequency-mode=\
    superchannel l2mtu=1600 mode=ap-bridge proprietary-extensions=pre-2.9.25 \
    ssid=XXX tx-power-mode=all-rates-fixed wireless-protocol=\
    802.11
where I get most of the performance. But this is not it. I figured out that I get best results with only N, and after couple of hours speedtests are worse.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4607836045

I've tried MT's btest.exe but it wont work for me. If I wont get any answers, I'll try to test wifi betwen two 2011, and other boards we have.

How can I get more?

I'm thinking about sending supout.rif but actually I didnt get any answer in the history yet, so I always had to figure it myself

I have the same router. :)

antenna-gain=5 why this? This is shorting wireless coverage. Back to 0 please, and see the change. :D

Look at link quality during the test. Make spectral scan to see the interference. Then select better frequency accordingly.

24 hours later all I get is

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4609933714

I've changed antenna-gain=5 to 0, no difference.

I have the same problem on all RB's I've tested
RB951G-2HnD
RB951-2n
RB912UAG-5HPnD (same on 2.4ghz module)
RB912UAG-2HPnD (same on 5ghz module)
RB751G-2HnD

and probably I've had different variants of above routers.

Okay now I've done spectral scan, I've set least used frequency. Now here's what I have:

Took speedtest at the same time: Image

Seems better now, but is this all?

Good you have followed my suggestion. Now it is the time to use dual chain mimo card in your computer. Or to enable the second chain in the routerboard if not already enabled.

The card I'm testing is actually 3x3 ultimate-n 6300 so it should work more ;)

I'm still betting that fault is in RB's. I've tried also on Note 4, S6, and iPhone 6, I can't get more of the speed.

edit 1:
Oh and I'm sorry now I see that I uploaded old picture.. This is the correction.

Have you enabled the second chain? Enable short guard interval too.

I have enabled second chain. I guess if it wouldnt be enabled I would connect to RB only with 150? After reboot I actually got 140/140, keeps getting better :D

With both chains on you can reach 200 Mbits in ideal situation. Your result is good now. I would not take care too much about it further.

Yeah looks good. But I have a fealing that 150/150 is max that wifi module in board can do. I still loose about 50Mbits. I will now try other boards with same configuration to compare. After that I'll try to test speed betwen two RB2011 and so on :)

If you remember anything please let me know :) I continue exploring and will post my results

I have passed around 220Mbits between two omnitiks. This is the maximum I have ever seen with 2x2 40mhz wide link with SGI on.
See the ccq when doing the test. Should be very close to 100. If it is lower, look at signal levels and snr, orient the antennas in better way, move far from ap, lower or rise the transmitt power on RB2011 or on your notebook card. All this can make the transfers better. Other things depend much more on your local situation, that you cannot sometimes do anything with (reflections or interference).
