The Dude, v6.37rc test builds.

Thu Jul 21, 2016 11:35 am

Known issues in v6.37rc16(reported for fixing):

UPDATE: For now I suggest to revert to rc15 and stay at that version till further notice.

Now there will be some rc builds published where client will stay in this broken state. Problem is that changes in the background to server/client side are so massive that at this state there is no point for us to fixing it just yet.

All entries below are already confirmed and reported to DEV for fixing.

Higher priority problems:
* Client updater broken.

Lower priority problems:
* Adapt dude link labels to be able to show 10G traffic and larger (snmp part left to fix);

Enhancement requests:
* Add option to use functions and oids in notification messages;
* Add AES encryption method to dude side snmp v3 profiles;
* Add option to configure user in a way to allow access only to certain panels;

Changes in v6.37rc4:

*) Added support for The Dude configuration from CLI; (work in progress).

Notes:
* At the moment only initial support has been added. While moving forwards in rc builds more functionality will become available in cli.
* Due to the massive changes in background various features in dude might be broken. We are aware of that.
* Client auto-updater is broken and manual install of rc builds (at least early ones) will be needed.
* v6.37 db is no longer backwards compatible with v6.36 version. Make sure that  you have backup of v6.36 db if you intend to downgrade server.

Another wish (once dude is stable again):

Better update support for ROS-CPEs:

- show version of ROS and version of Routerboard Firmware
- allow to update ROS and Routerboard Firmware with Dude
- scheduled update from Dude. Want to select CPEs and say: "update them at 3:00am both ROS and Firmware".

v6.37rc5 Bugs
  • Services -> Outages: Remove Resolved button does not work.
Suggestions
  • Notifications: Add HTTP POST Notification so notifications can be sent to external scripts/APIs such as Telegram.

- I like to request the ability to limit the CPU load display to 1 or 2 decimal places.
Currently my CCR1009's all show "0.66666668%" and "0.88888889%"

Updated from 6.36rc40 to 6.37rc5 and The Dude client will not update, therefore The Dude is now, effectively, completely non-functional.  What's worse is that there's no 6.37rc5 Dude Client on the MikroTik website so there seems no way to get a functional client. :(

Yeah, was just saying that even in rc5 it still isn't working.  I found the client above where I was looking in the CHR page - there really should be a link to the client in the CHR area, too. :)
(Thanks for the snappy (speed-wise) response!) :)

Can I also add that even though Agent functionality was restored towards the end of the 6.36rc process, it looks like it has now been broken again - at least in 6.37rc5 I can no longer connect to any Agents.  :(

@deathmagicmedia

in rc6 "remove resolved" button seems to work fine. I will check again when we get stable rc that we can upload to web.

@IntrusDave

We will look into that. I agree that looking at CCR cpu load is not convenient.

@HiltonT

If that you is your main server then I suggest to leave it at v6.36 build at least for now. These first rc builds of v6.37 might break some functions. If it's just a test server then go on.

And Agents are indeed broken. Problem is now reported for fixing.

This has got me wondering.  Agents work, then Agents break, then Agents work, then Agents break.  What sort of source coding system are you guys using internally that results in so many breakages of previously working code as you move forward?

It's all related mainly to this.

Hello,
I've some Dude related features requests
  1.  If I place the same device in two (or more) differents network maps, this device shouldn't be polled twice (or more times), one time per every map.
  2. If I disable a networkmap actually dude keeps polling and colling data for this map rather than pausing everything.
  3. Bring back web interface.
  4. Android client.
Thanks !

Changes in v6.37rc10:

*) Major change - The Dude now uses winbox port, this includes agents. The port
should change automatically both in client loader and agent configuration.
*) Fixed - Client auto update; (broken in one of previous rc builds)
*) Fixed - Object Copy/Paste between maps; (broken in one of previous rc builds)
*) Fixed - Agents broken; (broken in one of previous rc builds)

@andreat

1. That will change when CLI support for The Dude will be fully finished.
2. Data polling will go dormant only if you disable the devices in Device list. Just by disabling map server wont stop collecting data from those devices.
3. At some point in the future web interface will return in a new form.
4. At this point I cannot say if The Dude will appear as separate app on Android or iOS. Either way I speculate that web interface will get returned first and for start it will do for mobile devices.

Downgrade to older versions wont be possible from v6.37. To much major changes in the background. You will need to have two clients installed one for v6.36 and other for v6.37.

6.37rc10.. "Remove Resolved" still doesn't seem to work on the device's Outages tab, however, the button under Services/Outages does work.
Any suggestions?

How will this go with Dude Servers *behind* a gateway MikroTik box?  How will we contact the Dude servers considering we can't then port-forward the same port to the Dude server when it is already being used for the MikroTik gateway device?

Nice.

*) Fixed - Object Copy/Paste between maps; (broken in one of previous rc builds)

Nice.

*) Fixed - Agents broken; (broken in one of previous rc builds)

Awesome - off to try this and work out how to contact an Agent behind a MikroTik gateway using the same port...

Use Second IP to identify in NAT rule or Change winbox port in System-IP Service.

Dude for x86,
I updated from version 6.37rc5 to rc11 (and back to rc5):

Real traffic on the interface - 5-10 Mbps, in version 6.37rc5 is displayed correctly

Use Second IP to identify in NAT rule or Change winbox port in System-IP Service.
That would be great if every client had a 2nd IP, but the vast majority don't as they don't need them and they cost extra from their ISP.
So, with The Dude now using the Winbox port number, instead of having a rule to port forward the Dude port to the Dude server, we now need to also go onto each Dude server and change its Winbox port so we can still get to them when inside MikroTik gateway devices?  That seems a little... nonsensical to me, then, to have The Dude moved onto the Winbox port number.

Also, this will then make connecting to a MikroTik device behind a MikroTik gateway using RoMON non-functional as trying to connect to FF:00:00:BB:AA:RR:8292 results in "ERROR: invalid address - FF:00:00:BB:AA:RR:8292 - so this means that the MikroTik device running The Dude behind a gateway can be addressed *either* as a Dude device, therefore allow no RouterOS updates, *or* as a MikroTik device, therefore have no Agent functionality.

Can I suggest that MikroTik either reverses the decision to move The Dude to the Winbox port, or adds the required functionality to Winbox to re-enable the lost functionality due to this port change.  Right ow, this port move is causing the loss of a significant amount of functionality of devices behind a MikroTik gateway device.

Remove resolved button in Device configuration window -> Outages tab is indeed broken. Problem is now reported as bug.

@KVB @kolorasta

Those links show incorrect data with snmp, ros or both link mastering type?

Edit: never mind. I think that I just found this one in one of my x86 dude servers. Link label shows correct speed but graphs are showing incorrect info. Problem reported as bug.

@HiltonT

No need to change default port on the lan device. Just use different external port in forwarding rule on device which you will do NAT for that network.

What am I missing here? Out of 64k ports available, you choose to use the same port for the Dude as the default Winbox port? I don't understand the logic behind that. Can you explain? Because from the outside this seems to just complicate things with no real benefit. I was about to set up a test Dude server, to experiment with eventually moving from the old unsupported beta version. Is the port number fixed, or can we change it in the server and client?

It's not a big deal. It simplifies things. You set the WinBox port in ip->services.

I understand there are workarounds. Duct tape and baling wire are workarounds.

I just looked at the Winbox launch to see where I could change the port. If it's there, I'm not seeing it.

Interesting. I just installed Demo ROS on an old Vista machine. If you change the Winbox port in X86, then it automatically changes the Dude port with it. So they share the same port. That was my confusion. Different applications, I would have assumed you would want different ports. I guess not. Oh, and under server settings in the Dude, the port still shows 2210/2211, but obviously it's not.

One thing I'm noticing. I have 2 PCs. One is running Dude 4.0b3 client for our production network, and one is running 6.37rc12 client for testing purposes. It takes 4.0b3 with it's 100s of devices about 2 seconds to load. 6.37rc12 with one device configured takes 2 minutes and 40 seconds while it says "Getting Stuff". Discovery Services are off. Is this normal? Winbox opens immediately.

I've noticed the same. Dude on my Mac at home takes about 2 minutes to "get stuff", while Dude on a VM in my datacenter "gets stuff" almost instantly. I haven't taken the time to figure out what is going on yet.

Found the slow startup problem. I had the change the ether1 queue on the server from "only-hardware-queue" to "ethernet-default". It made a big difference in how "snappy" it is.

On a different note, I'm seeing times when a device which is disabled doesn't change its color from what it was before being disabled. A Dude server reboot is necessary to get it to show gray.

Re: The Dude, v6.37rc test builds.

Mon Aug 08, 2016 3:05 am

A few bugs I've seen.

As I mentioned, we are running Dude 4.0b3 on our production network, and I'm experimenting with "Dude NG" as I call 6.37rc12 on X86. When I exported and then imported the database from 4.0b3 to 6.37, I noticed that it cleared the Submap>Background>Tile checkbox on all our submaps.

The other thing I'm seeing was a bug in 4.0b3 and is still there. When you go to "Notifications" in a service, it will sometimes toggle one of the notifications differently than it really is, in the display. If you cancel out and test notifications, you can see it's a "read and display" problem, it's not really toggled. But if it's displayed toggled and you exit with "OK", it will save it toggled. If you go to the services tab and step through the services, you will sometimes notice that the toggled notification error steps down the notification display as you step down through the services.

Finally, a clarification on the device showing the wrong state/color. It seems the services don't always like to be disabled/enabled. They will sometimes freeze up the client for a period of time, and when the client finally starts working, various parts of the display will be incorrect. Such as showing a proper green flag next to the service, but a grayed out "X" will still be there, indicating the service is disabled, when in fact it's enabled and working properly. And as I mentioned, the proper service state doesn't always get handed up to the device and the submap icon. A client restart doesn't fix it, but a server restart does.

Thanks for your hard work guys.

I have a suggestion for the section of charts. Currently, we monitor the signal values of customers through SNMP function and service. It's really useful to know whether an antenna has been moved, or if ap is failing. My suggestion is that by placing the cursor over a graph, the actual value is displayed in that area of the chart. If the difference between values is very high, it is clear, but it is not high hardly differs.

Something like that would be my idea

Changes in v6.37rc15:

*) Fixed - Custom created panel functionality.
*) Fixed - Remove resolved buttons; (both)
*) Fixed - Link graph problem with showing incorrect traffic amount.
*) Fixed - Device panel -> ROS tab -> Device sub-tab "Upgrade" button.

For Client loader and added Agents secure mode is now selected by default. Also ROS devices
now by default will use secure mode. (Active if ROS device check-box selected). You
can still select standard mode if you prefer it.

Let us know if setting secure mode as default causes any problems and if you have
any other feedback about this change.

We are aware of this problem with client crashing soon after connecting to server. Unfortunately rc16 is a bad build.

UPDATE: For now I suggest to revert to rc15 and stay at that version till further notice.

Now there will be some rc builds published where client will stay in this broken state. Problem is that changes in the background to server/client side are so massive that at this state there is no point for us to fixing it just yet.

By hand or script. We still have rc builds on cloud. Only for x86 there are no $arch needed as it is not mentioned in full download url.
#!/bin/bash

arch="tile"
ver="6.37rc15"
durl="http://download2.mikrotik.com/routeros/"

wget "$durl$ver/routeros-$arch-$ver.npk"
wget "$durl$ver/all_packages-$arch-$ver.zip"
wget "$durl$ver/dude-$arch-$ver.npk"
wget "$durl$ver/dude-install-$ver.exe"

That is not possible at the moment. However we do intend to add some access to server host ROS side for better notification options.

For those that are using latest rc builds. One change to note.

* Dude data files are no longer hidden in ROS file menu view.
* Dude will now show "default" dir in it's "data/files" directory. It contains default mibs/images/etc that comes with server in read-only mode.
-- You can still create your own mib/images/etc directories for custom mibs/images/etc.
-- When upgraded to this build, dude server will use both "default" and old file directories. And server will rely on content in old dir's till point where the contents are removed.
--- If you delete old MIB folded contents dude will automatically use "default" dir + those custom mibs that you have in your MIB folder (if there are any).
--- If you delete old Images folder contents then you will need to reconfigure those images for your maps/objects.

Changes in v6.36rc21:

* Fixed some client and server crashes.
* Added back notification type "Execute on Server". In this notification you can type
in ROS script and it will be executed on The Dude server host. Useful all kinds
of custom notifications and actions.

- Sending SMS. (now that execute on server option has been added, this wont be added as separate notification type)
- Custom email.
- And practically anything else.

Note: Client auto updater is still broken.

There are still features that are broken in v6.37rc builds due to all of the changes that are ongoing in background. However rc21 client no longer crashes when connecting to server. So it is definitely better than what was going on with rc16-rc19 builds.

Two questions

1. How to set Time Zone in Dude (in Router Time Zone is correct not in Dude)
2. I need command to clean all Dude database - return Dude to default like "system reset no-default=yes"

Thanks.

Edit: After changing Time Zone in Router after less than 1h Dude corrected time.

Now that the dude uses radius from the host Mikrotik to authenticate, would it be possible to add two new Tool variables which are the current dude client username and password. Maybe [Client.Username] and [Client.Password].

We've made tools to launch Winbox 3 like "c:\winbox.exe [Device.FirstAddress] [Device.UserName] [Device.Password]" and it would be very useful to be able to just use the current users credentials and not the credentials from the settings in the device on dude.

Would it be possible to enable/disable a submap state propagation to all (or defined number) upper levels? In The Dude 4b3 with this configuration Map -> Submap1 -> Submap2, if Submap2 has outages it is red in Submap1, but Submap1 is not red in Map. If there are a lot of devices in one area (Submap1) it is better to divide them into a several subareas (Submpa2) and without this option it is not possible to visually check the state of the whole network (Map).

I noticed in the change log, that diff64 was fixed in 6.36. Was that change introduced into 6.37rc, and if so, in which release? And what was fixed?

Thanks

1. What happened to the Logging Section to which Syslog messages were being sent? Is this being deprecated ?

2. I cannot login to the dude - we are using Radius Authentication for Winbox Login, and with The Dude using local RouterOS users for Authentication, there is something broken here. I can login with local use, but I am getting the following for Radius Users: "Login failed: radius authentication is not supported for old challenges (6)"

In the v6.37rc24-27 there is a problem with server crash after displaying any device popup window. I.e. you hold cursor for a moment on any device on any map, after taking it away from that device, server crash and then recovers itself after few seconds.

Hi All;

We've just started playing around with 6.37 RC27 after giving this a bit of a wide berth for a while and the first issue we're seeing (after we import our dude database from 4.0beta3) is when the new instance first fires up it very slowly connects to all our AP's (routerOS connection type); it takes about 30 minutes to cycle through them all and connect. Once connected initially they reconnect just fine until we restart the service.

Is this a change made for a reason and can we turn it off; or is it a known bug?

Thanks!

At the moment this can only be done by disabling the server and deleting old db file.

Sounds over all handy. Will check if we can create this login option for devices.

I'll check if we can make it so that main map shows problems in sub maps if they are stacked like that.
I noticed in the change log, that diff64 was fixed in 6.36. Was that change introduced into 6.37rc, and if so, in which release? And what was fixed?
This specific change should be in all builds starting with 6.36 and newer.

1. It is still there, just in different form. Check wiki manual for more details. Note that new implementation will be improved to have better default settings and no manual interaction on ROS host side would be needed.

2. What radius software are you using? When I tried with user manager I didn't encounter any problems.
...
Haha - of course e-mail is there - sorry.

It's already there for a few rc builds. Check my post on "execute on server" notification.

Heya; when we start the dude server / service fresh; it appears to rate limit the "routeros" connection type to devices on any given map :) Is what i mean.

You may already know this then, since 10g interfaces are on your to-do list. But in 6.37rc15 at least, diff64 has a serious limitation. While it can handle 64 bit counters as inputs, its output is the least significant 32 bits. So any difference over ~4.29 billion is erroneous.

Cheers

There is a bug in 4b3 when you delete somehow a combination of device and link. I don't know how to reproduce it exactly. But the result is a deleted link in upper left corner of each map. It appears there after several seconds after switching to a map. It can't be moved, but you can double click it and use Remove button. There can be more of such links over each other. Is this fixed in a new version?

1. 6.37rc15 hangs after some time - can be 2 days, can be week. After hang it is unable to login to the winbox, dude does not accept connections, it is possible to login to winbox only using mac telnet and do /system reboot

2. 6.37rc27 very unstable. Disconnects all dude sessions randomly.

3. 6.37rc27 needs "ftp" permission for users, if there is no ftp permission, then it does not allow login to dude.

Hi

As it is not listed in the features/bugs list, I would like to add a feature request.

Implementation of Google Maps API, so that we can position the devices on a dynamic, real world, map.

Thank you for updating us on the progress of The Dude. This kind of community connection is wonderful!

i think it happens when you copy a device that has a link and paste it in another map.

RC38
I am seeing the numbers in RX/TX in the graphs now with "Master Type" == routeros, but it shows the first entry of that interface list.

Note: For example, if I change the interface to "wlan1", Dude will display the result for wlan1, but the entry continues to display the first entry, in my case, "bridge1".

Yup, my mini-map is a mess.

Also, within Dude, I cannot upload anything to Dude's "files" folder.

Would love to see the Dude have a minor/major alarm display option instead of partial/full down. A service would be specified as a minor or major service, which would change the color of the device and submap icon, based upon the most severe service that's down.

Hello I am new here, I use long dude is a sensational network monitor can not imagine working without it.
In recent versions, loaded with links do not change color on the map where there are hundreds of routers and hundreds of links between them is very necessary.
I am sorry for my language.

We added a bit different approach for now. You can create custom tool with winbox for example: "D:/winbox.exe [Device.FirstAddress] [Admin.Name] [Admin.Password]" it will allow you
attempt login into that device via same user credentials that you are currently using in your dude client.

What about any polling multi-thread support? So all CPUs on CCR are used at least for polling? Now it goes 100% on one CPU all the way.

Hi

Does the dude RC support login via radius? i.e we can winbox to routers this way, can the new dude not support this?

Error message on the dude 6.37rc42 is:
Login failed: radius authentication is not supported for old challenges (6)

Changes in 6.37rc42

- Disabled upload and drag&drop feature in Dude, for file management use Winbox, Webfig or ftp.
- Dude client will be instantly disconnected when the Dude server has stopped.

We will include fix for this in next releases.
I am able to upload files to Dude via Winbox. I am unable to use Dude's upgrade feature on my ROS devices to a newer or older ROS version. When I try, nothing happens.
