SNMP Walk and Windows 2003 Server Problem

I have the following problem. I have installed snmp dienst auf 2 xppro machines and 2 windows 2003 servers. I immediately could discover the probes Disk CPU etc on the xp machines but I can't get any information from the 2003 Servers. Has anyone an idea what I might have to additionally do in order to probe the 2003 Servers.

The XP SNMP service by default allows anyone to read out its values. In 2003 by default no one is allowed.

Go into the service properties and set the security parameters there.

And by the way: the 2003 way of dealing with security makes sense. SNMP v1 and v3 have no real means of authentication. Only making sure nobody knows the community strings is providing somewhat security. Even so: those are easily sniffed out. So basicly anyone on your network can read out all XP machines with SNMP services. That may not be something you want...

Good idea is also to pass by the XP machines to tighten its SNMP service's security... for example only allow the Dude server SNMP access.

I too was looking to get snmp working on server 2003. Even my answer is a little late. But, I hope this help someone when they are looking for an answer to enable snmp on 2003. I tried it and snmp works after you do some tweaking to the snmp services in server 2003.

I've exactly the same problem over here. I've tried what you say, but didn't work.
i've tried this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/324263 but didn't work
because on step 3, there is no "SNMP Service".

Problem solved!!

i had to install SNMP services via add/remove windows components > management and monitoring tools!

than it will work. (maybe you have to configure it. see the link above, configure it exact the same as XP Pro)

After install snmp service, go to computer management > services, open snmp services. Under tab security add community name and add the IP of your dude server.
