The Dude - Windows -> Linux Migration

Wed Jun 19, 2013 11:06 am

Hi Guys

Does anyone have experience with migrating the Dude from Windows to Linux.

I have been using The Dude for about 3 years now on a Windows XP Machine but I want to move it for more stability.

Version 4.0 beta 3

I had the same problem. The only solution is to install a routerOS x86 + Free License and run dude.npk on it. RouterOS is a mikrotik proprietary system based on Linux Kernel.

I don't think moving Dude to linux will increase stability. Dude will have to be run in Wine, and there will be all kinds of risks.

For future reference, Dude runs quite happily in WINE, the wiki has pretty good instructions, and below is specific instructions for doing it on Ubuntu 12.04 headless server:

The application is using windows-style libraries, the core OS (e.g. the network stack) isn't though.

You should try CloudView NMS http://www.cloudviewnms.com . This is what we use. It runs on all the platforms: Linux, Mac OS, Windows.... WebFig, WinBox and other 3rd party GUI tools are easily integrated. We found it amazingly stable and reliable for large networks and that is what we use in all our installations now.
