wireguard peer client-* properties

Tue Nov 21, 2023 12:23 am

Can someone explain wg peer client properties
There is no much explanation in official documentation
For example:
client-address and client-endpoint vs endpoint-address,
client-listen-port vs endpoint-port vs listen-port

You have to understand that WG is a tunnel and so everything is double.

One set for the tunnel and one for the traffic inside that tunnel.

If you read UDP in the explaination then it describes the tunnel.

I do understand that, but I'd like to have a formal explanation
Weird thing is that official help doesn't even mention about those properties :-?

It looks like these properties don't affect anything
I've tried different values on both sides - nothing happens
have no idea what are they for

client-address is used for the client-server setup scenario, when the configuration is imported using a qr code for a client (for example, a phone), then this address for the wg interface is set on that device.

Additional question then:
where does show-client-config appear which is mentioned in Help pages ?
I don't see it in winbox nor cli (7.13rc2)

Can you confirm that all these client-* fields are only for the client's config generation, and do not affect the tunnel operation ?

Try to change any one of client-* configuations, Apply , and then look the "Client Config" contents below, you'll get the answer.
