Connect MikroTik Router to other wifi routers

Mon Jan 29, 2024 8:23 am

Hi

I used to use Fortigate but due to its cost I am trying MikroTik Router first time. Here is the issue I am having and not sure how to configure it correctly in MikroTik.

Router A - MikroTik (Does not have Wifi) - Default configuration with default subnet of 192.168.88.0/24
Rouer B - Eero Wifi Router - Subnet configured 192.168.7.0/24
Router C - Airport Wifi Router - Subnet configured 192.168.14.0/24
Router D - Verizon Wifi Router - Subnet configured 192.168.19.0/24

When configured MikroTik router, I used default configuration. It has cable from ISP in ether1 port (WAN). When I connect through wired connection from a computer to MikroTik at ports ether2 to ether5, I am able to connect to internet, so no issue here.

After that I connected Router B (Eero) at ether2 port on MikroTik and magically it worked. Eero does not have specific WAN or LAN port. You put cable in the port and it automatically detects if it is WAN or LAN. I can connect to Eero through Wifi and I am able to browse internet and connect to MikroTik at 192.168.88.1 address.

Issue is with Router C and Router D. If I connect any of these routers to MikroTik at port ether3 or ether4 or ether5, I cannot browse internet or cannot connect to MikroTik at 192.168.88.1. I tried connecting using both WAN and LAN ports of Router C and D.

What I am missing? Thanks in advance.

If you really have default configuration on your Mikrotik device then when you connect your routers C and D WAN port to the ether 3,4,5 your devices should receive IP address.

What do you see when access your devices interface?

If you want to use them as AP then consider setting them as AP bridge, so all routing functions, DHCP etc is handled by Mikrotik.

Lets consider router D here that has subnet of 192.168.19.0/24. Its WAN port is connected to Mikrotik ether5.

On router D I see public IP 192.168.88.159, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.88.1. This comes from Mikrotik.

When I connect my laptop to router D, I see wifi ip as 192.168.19.3, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.19.1. These are assigned by router D to the laptop.

So I would say that problem is in router C and D configuration. But why would you like to use them as a router ?

Why not configure them as AP ?

AP is my last option if nothing works. But let's say I want to use Router C and Router D as routers for the time being. These routers still work when I connect them to Fortigate router (where they were connected earlier). But they do not work if I connect them to MikroTik. In that case, I believe, there is something that I may need to configure in MikroTik not in Router C and D. In FortiGate router, I had VLANs and IP Policies configured. That was simpler and easy to use interface. In Mikrotik's RouterOS there is a lot of things at lower level that I may need to learn as I am not network expert, just know the basics. I was hoping if some could guide me and I could achieve my goal in 2 or 3 simpler configurations in RouterOS if possible.

Well, in that case you should export your mikrotik configuration here so we can see what did you modified.

Are you trying to create VLANs ?

I just did something very similar today with two Mikrotiks, one for my IoT and the other for my Twinkly lights, and it worked a treat.
They are both cabled off my main Asus router on 192.168.50.1

I used Home AP Dual Quickset mode, then set WAN to DHCP, next set LAN on each to 192.168.50.2 and 3, turned off DHCP and set up their wireless APs.
I also selected 'bridge all ports' but I still needed to cable to port 2 on the Mikrotiks for it to work. I thought port 1 should have worked.

If you wanted routing you could connect to Port 1, set WAN to DCHP or a static off your main router and set a different range on the LAN side.

*Disclaimer - I know nothing about networking.

EDIT - just tried assigning Internet to the SFP port and now port 1 works for my LAN traffic.
