Ultimate multi-cAP AX configuration

Tue Feb 20, 2024 11:22 am

Hello,

I know that there is already a lot of content about how to properly configure wifi APs in this forum, but still, I am experiencing multiple issues in my setup and am still struggling to configure them.
I have 1000 square meter space with 4 cAP ax (one in each corner).
I don't use CAPsMAN as I have experiences issues in the past with broadcasting, and it makes my network more complicated (I have a lot of different networking hardware between the router and the APs and CAPsMAN makes it seem like the APs are plugged directly on the router.).
Finally, my APs have two SSIDs: a guest and a main, on two different VLANs.

My problems are the following:
- A lot of devices connect to the 2ghz network, even though there is the 5ghz network with the same SSID next to it.
- Even though I am next to an AP, my computer tends to stay connected to an AP very far away.
- Apple users are experiencing connectivity issues (cannot connect to wifi).
- It is takes some time connecting to the wifi

What I have tried so far:
- Reducing the TX-Power of the 2ghz antenna
- Enabling FT & FT Over DS
- Switching from 20Mhz to 20/40MHz Ce on the 5Ghz antenna
- Disabling WPA3-PSK (leaving only WPA2-PSK)

Here is an export

AFAIK, FT requires CAPsMAN.
I am not sure that FT is needed to make everything work, but I would suggest to try CAPsMAN. Having a single manager could help roaming even if FT is not enabled (unfortunately, it depends on the client).

Local forwarding could be used with capsman v2, now it's default for wifi-qcom so this won't be the case.

I have 1000 square meter space with 4 cAP ax (one in each corner).
In my opinion 4 points for such an area is not enough.
I have an object where, for example, 450 square meters, two floors, 5 points are not enough.
Did you do a radio survey?
Did you calculate the placement of points, frequency planning?
For your purposes, you need to set up a Capsman.
You need to learn how to do it or hire a specialist.
If there will be specific questions ask us, we will help you.

Thank you guys for your help.
I did manage to reach more stability with CAPsMAN & FT activated on it.
Honestly, the 4 APs are doing ok, everyone receives wifi properly.
Even though it is 1000 square meters, the walls are pretty thin and the office is a perfect square.

Here is where I am:
- CAPsMAN is working fine (and the packets are forwarded locally, even though I did not find the setting)
- FT is activated and works (I see some devices roaming on the log)
- WPA2 & WPA3 are activated and the apple users are receiving wifi properly.

I still do however have a lot of devices connecting to 2Ghz instead of 5Ghz, but well it is not such an issue.

Mikrotik support mentioned somewhere on the forum that band steering prioritises 5GHz over 2.4, so the problem is likely a client issue.

In my opinion 4 points for such an area is not enough.
1000 m2 in a "perfect" square mean roughly 32 meter side, as 32x32=1024

With four devices in the four corners, the most distant point is the center/crossing of diagonals, i.e. 16x1.414=22.62 m

It is not in itself a "crazy" distance IMHO (of course it depends a lot on how internal walls are made, but if they are thin, not particularly opaque to radio waves they shouldn't be such a problem, particularly at 2.4 GHz), surely the 4 AP's in the 4 corners are not the best possible distribution.

I suspect that it is the different (better) "penetration" of 2.4GHz when compared to the 5GHz that makes some devices "prefer" 2.4 GHz.

Ideally those devices should be placed in the center of 4 squares making up that 1000m2 area.
So distances will even be less.
11.3m max.
