Lot's of users in small building comments request.

Fri Mar 09, 2012 1:23 pm

Hello,

I have to cover a building of 35x60 meters in one floor, only with columns inside. I will have about 400 concurrent users there (ipads, iphones, BB, HTCs.. laptops..)

My problem is that interferences will be very high. The customer wants to rent the network for 4 days. All previous years, the network of the event died because the big number of users.. then, this year we want it running : D!

Ruckus is not an option due to the costs, and I will try to install 15 multiband APs, with 1x2.4 and 1x5ghz radio on each. It will be better to make it 802.11N with a 2.4 n-radio and 5ghz n-radio?

Anyone did a project like this? How many minutes will work the network properly? How many mobile users you had in 802.11g AP?

All the APs will validate users to a hotspot (RB1100AHx2).

thanks,

We've covered events like this, using standard 2.4ghz access points. We simply used 3 channels in a non adjacent pattern all wired back to the controller ( in our case we used an RB1200) and used a proxy server (squid) to try to ensure as much internet bandwidth was freed up from unnecessary use.

Make sure each access point is not sending out too much power, drop it down as necessary to avoid too much overlap.

I think we ended up with around 48 users max on a single node during the day, and it held up (these were 180mhz b/g kit) so newer equipment should work much better.

I would go with N, and TheWifiGuy said everything I was going to and more.

ClearOS might work for the edge/squid. I know the older versions had a check box to force users to work through a transparent proxy. A little quicker to configure than a full fledged Linux box and the horsepower is dependent on your parts. Pretty decent little setup.
