New NOC option for Central Swtich vs Dell 4048s-on

Fri Jan 26, 2024 8:53 am

Starting a new NOC and looking for a switch in my Switch Centric design.

My current setup includes 2 Dell 4048s-on switches. Should I go with those or is there a viable Mikrotik option.

I am looking to run CCR2118 as border and nat routers. I don’t need 48 Ports but need the performance.

What hardware should I get?

If you're looking for switches, then any of CRS3xx or CRS5xx should do. Which model in particular depends on requirements regarding number and speed of ports.

Just a word of caution: many of mentioned switches seem to suffer when switching traffic between ports with different (negotiated) speeds in certain use scenarios. Direction from faster towards slower is the problematic one. If you foresee such port speed mix, then you may want to test switch planned to be used and see if it exhibits the mentioned problem.

I'd stick with the Dell switches if I were you.
MikroTik switches are a pain to configure and manage, not to mention that depending on your config they may not be as stable.

For high performance switching, as for storage and such - I would keep the Dell's. Mikrotik isn't there yet.
