RB5009 - problem with USB port for LTE modem

Fri Feb 23, 2024 12:45 pm

Hi all! Can u help me plz?
On my router 5009 I accidentally deleted the usb port in system/ports.
Now no usb modem works - LTE interface does not appear, but at the same time the modem is visible in system/resource/usb.
How to return USB to system/ports? Or how to make the modem work?
I tried /system/routerboard/usb/set type=auto \ USB-type-A usb-mode=automatic \ force-host - but nothing helped.
RoS version is 7.13.5. Fibocom L850-GL modem (MBIM mode - AT+GTUSBMODE=7). The modem is tested and working.

What does system / resources / usb show ?

I don't have anything in system / ports on my RB5009 but in my case there is only a Flashdrive in it, no modem.

Already tried reboot ?
Reset to default config ? (make sure to backup AND export config first and move both files away from your device).

The modem is visible in system/resource/usb.
But LTE interface does not appear, PPP client cannot be created - ports are empty.
I tried rebooting - no result.
I also tried to connect the modem in non mbim mode.
I will try to flash via Netinstall one of these days.

Maybe it's not needed to netinstall.
Reset to default config might already be enough.

You can always netinstall if that doesn't help.

BTW for test just plugged a LTE USB stick I had lying around in AX3, it doesn't show in System / ports either.
It does show in System / resources / USB.

I wonder - what could it be then? Why the modem is in system/resource/usb, but it cannot be used, LTE interface does not appear, and you cannot even use AT commands for the modem.
Any ideas?

Did you already try to add lte manually again ?
Had it happen to me as well once on sxt lte device.
Manually adding lte itf solved it for me.

Otherwise reset to default config first.
Last resort netinstall.

What is strange - if I do /system/routerboard/usb/power-reset, the following entry appears in the logs: lte2 mbim: error: wdm send failed: 19.
I don't understand what should be done...

Netinstall didn't help - system/ports is empty and the modem still won't start. LTE interface did not appear.
Most likely something must be done with the modem.

I haven't found how to add the lte interface manually.
Another small question about RB5009: should system/console be empty? I also have empty in system/ports (no serial0, no usb)...

Console: RB5009 doesn't have console port.
System/ports: It's empty for me as well. Even when I plug in a USB LTE device (but it does show in Resources / USB).

If you use a USB flash drive, does that show up ?

Otherwise I'm out of ideas as well on how to proceed then.
Maybe you can contact support and ask them how to correct this ?

When I connect USB modem - in system/recourse/usb modem appears (but LTE interface does not appear and PPP connection cannot be created), if I connect USB-flash drive - it also appears in system/resource/usb. But still empty in system/ports.

Well, the topic can be closed - most likely incompatibility of Fibocom L850-GL modem and ARM64. Option to re-flash the modem with different firmware in the hope that it will work.
Or just change the modem :)

When I connect USB modem - in system/recourse/usb modem appears ...

This only proves that USB device is known to host (RB5009), the name is taken from USB IDS database (likely expirt from http://www.linux-usb.org/). But this doesn't mean that ROS has necessary driver available and without driver your USB drvice is entirely useless. No flashing with different will cgange this, it'll most probably still identify itself with same vendor_ID:device_ID combination ...

So yes, change the modem and this time find out which LTE modems are actually supported by ROS (it's ROS version dependent).

Then it turns out to be very strange: the modem works fine in different versions of RouterOS (6.49.6, 7.12.1, 7.13.5) - but only if the architecture is not ARM64 and the port is not usb3 (I can't say more precisely - I don't have ARM64+usb3 besides RB5009 at hand).... In the same hAP AC^2 modem with the same adapter (usb3-m2) works absolutely fine (but in hAP AC^2 both ARM architecture and usb2 port).

In this case you may want to ask support@mikrotik.com directly if there's a reason for modem not working in your particular device/ROS combination.

Yes, I asked support@mikrotik.com and they answered me that the most probable reason is incompatibility of modem and ARM64 architecture. They also said that as a solution I should try other modem firmware. Or isolate contacts and downgrade usb3 to usb2.
There was also a discussion of the modem and RouterOS in the topic viewtopic.php?t=169829
