Audience different revisions showing different current tx-rates

Sat Mar 16, 2024 7:31 pm

I have three Audience. Two of them are r2, one is without revision.

All of them running on capsman, and the newest routerOS 7.14.1. In the CAPsMAN configuration I have nothing configured neither for tx-power nor for antenna gain.

When I check the one without revision:
1. It shows current tx-power 19 on 2.4 and tx-power 30 on 5Ghz.

When I check those with r2 revision:
They show current tx-power of 16 on 2.4 and current tx-power of 25 on 5GHz.

It seems to me that r2 are correct ones and that the one without revision is not taking in account anthenna gain. Is this something that should be fixed somewhere or is there anything I can do about it to fix it?

Used Tx power depends on country regulatory limits (I guess you have that setting same for the whole setup) and in 5GHz band also on particular frequency used. Another peculiarity is audience which has two 5GHz radios and these two have pretty distinct characteristics (one has 2 chains and Tx power up to 28dBm, the other has 4 chains and Tx power up to 32dBm).

I use same country setup for the whole configuration (country in Europe).

I use the same 5GHZ radio on all devices (the 4 chains one).

Re: Audience different revisions showing different current tx-rates

So it's then down to frequency-related country regulations. My audience (it's an r2 revision), running 7.13, shows the following for one ETSI country:
  ranges: 2402-2482/20
          5170-5250/23/indoor
          5250-5330/23/indoor/dfs
          5490-5710/30/dfs

I believe that the 4-chain radio operates exclusively in the frequency range from 5490MHz upwards. So the Tx power should be at around 25dBm (antenna gain of 4.5dBi (rounded upwards to 5dBi) subtracted from 30dBm country limit). Mine (/interface/wifi/monitor 2) shows 24dBm.

Now in theory it's possible to set antenna gain to 0 which would allow to rise Tx power. However antenna gain for devices with built-in antennae, information about physical antenna gain is "baked in". If I try to set antenna-gain parameter (in CLI it's available in configuration submenu) to 0, the setting is accepted (and shown in configuration export as it differs from default setting), but checking running values (/interface/wifi/monitor 2) shows that it's been ignored (comment "antenna-gain locked, using 5" shown in red).

What might be possible: antenna gain parameter locking was introduced at some certain time. It could be that your "no revision" audience predates that time and with antenna gain unset it may be interpreted as 0 ... making it allow higher Tx power.

The 4x4 radio only works from 149 up, from what I could tell.

Nope, my Audience runs its 4x4 radio on 5500 Ceee just fine (that's channel 100).

Guess I never thought to try it in the DFS channels. I tried channel 36 and got an unsupported channel red message.

Yup, as designed. The 2x2 radio supports channels between 5180MHz and 5320MHz (channels 36-64) ... and 4x4 radio supports channels between 5500MHz and 5720MHz (channels 100-144). All stated frequencies are center frequencies of 20MHz channels, so actual range is a tad larger, but one can not set frequency outside stated boundaries.

This is what I am getting. Only the first one has such tx-power. I don't know how to check antenna gain, if someone can instruct me, that would be great.

Re: Audience different revisions showing different current tx-rates

I'd say this means that it's possible to set antenna-gain to 0 (AFAIK default is unset which means minimum allowed value or 0 if there's no minimum) and hence you can see 5dB higher actual Tx power.

If you want to "align" Tx powers between units (and to actual country regulations), then you should set antenna gain to value, appropriate for each antenna (4 for 2.4GHz antenna and 5 for 5GHz antennae):
/interface/wifi
set [ find default-name="wifi1" ] configuration.antenna-gain=4
set [ find default-name="wifi2" ] configuration.antenna-gain=5
set [ find default-name="wifi3" ] configuration.antenna-gain=5

The code above doesn't depend on the country setting, it simply mimics configuration of devices with later factory software versions.

And I guess that you can either set it on capsman (but then you have to use specific provisioning rules either for specific audience device or for all audience devices, setting it again on devices which already observe same lower limits is harmless) or you can probably set it on the offending device locally (IIRC local settings get applied if CAPsMAN doesn't overwrite it with different value).

Setting locally on the 'offender' and then re-provisioning it, it didn't help. I am wondering why not, and is this a bug?

Setting it on the cAPsMan, helped.

Thank you for all your help !

Probably it's a feature. After all, CAPsMAN is supposed to provision radio interfaces (to their fullest), leaving antenna gain out would be a bug I guess.

Huh. I have an r2 Audience, and no `min-antenna-gain` in `.../radio/print detail`... Funny thing is, I ran it without any kind of limit on tx-power (except for setting the right country) for quite some time due to lack of knowledge, and that thing was cooking itself. Now I wonder if it was legit pumping a watt worth of signal into the antenna. Will investigate further.

It wasn't legit. Country regulations are limiting EIRP which includes antenna gain (and cable losses if there are any) and with antenna gain of 4.5dBi this means your Audience transmitted with EIRP of 34.5dBm (which would translate to slightly less than 3W if it wasn't for antenna gain).

Yup. Sure enough.

mtdbms.png

It even goes up and down a bit accordingly in WiFi Analyzer. 30dBm, hovers around -40 dBm; 25 dBm, hovers around -45.

And, get this, even if you set antenna-gain on the router itself, leaving it unset in CAPsMAN overrides that value. I can't actually monitor this from the Audience, because once you turn on CAPsMAN, the interfaces bug themselves into a 'state: disabled'. But WiFi Analyzer shows that, with antenna-gain set on the router, but no antenna-gain and tx power set in CAPsMAN config, it hovers around -40 dBm, just as it did while pumping 30 dBm into the antenna. Fun. Well, for anyone but my neighbors, that is.

Here's another fun thing I found. Here's the output of `/interface/wifi/radio/print detail` on one of my hAP ac2s, running ROS 7.14.1, same as the Audience:
Flags: L - local
 0 L radio-mac=[REDACTED] tx-chains=0,1 rx-chains=0,1 bands=2ghz-g:20mhz,2ghz-n:20mhz,20/40mhz
     ciphers=tkip,ccmp,gcmp,ccmp-256,gcmp-256,cmac,gmac,cmac-256,gmac-256 countries=all
     2g-channels=2412,2417,2422,2427,2432,2437,2442,2447,2452,2457,2462,2467,2472 max-interfaces=16 max-station-interfaces=3 max-peers=129
     hw-type="IPQ4019" hw-caps=sniffer interface=wifi1

 1 L radio-mac=[REDACTED] tx-chains=0,1 rx-chains=0,1 bands=5ghz-a:20mhz,5ghz-n:20mhz,20/40mhz,5ghz-ac:20mhz,20/40mhz,20/40/80mhz
     ciphers=tkip,ccmp,gcmp,ccmp-256,gcmp-256,cmac,gmac,cmac-256,gmac-256 countries=all
     5g-channels=5180,5200,5220,5240,5260,5280,5300,5320,5500,5520,5540,5560,5580,5600,5620,5640,5660,5680,5700,5720,5745,5765,5785,5805,
            5825
     max-interfaces=16 max-station-interfaces=3 max-peers=129 hw-type="IPQ4019" hw-caps=sniffer interface=wifi2

Do you see min-antenna-gain? Because I sure don't. It's nowhere to be found. BUT, there's yet another plot twist. If you actually try to harness the UNLIMITED TX POWAH, it just puts you right back to 26 dBm. With no antenna-gain set and no min-antenna-gain present. And if I then set antenna-gain to 5, it goes further down to 25 dBm.

All of the routers were on 6.49.10 for the longest time, then I upgraded them to ROS 7.12, then I believe to 7.13, via `/system/packages`. After the upgrade to 7.13, I removed the `wireless` driver and installed `wifi-qcom-ac` on all of them. I might have reset them after that and restored them with a script. I don't remember whether or not minimum antenna-gain was working correctly on the Audience while it was on 6.49.10.

Morale of the story, I am now setting antenna-gain explicitly on all of the routers, both in local config and in CAPsMAN.

Wait, the hAP ac2 only goes up to 26 dBm of transmit power anyway, doesn't it?

Oh. Oh no...

So, confirmed, hAP ac2 behaves same as the Audience, with the only difference being that it can't reach 30 dBm. I tested it.

Just for kicks and giggles, I have another hAP ac2, running as CAPsMAN controller for the aforementioned hAP ac2 and Audience. It has no min-antenna-gain in the thing too, and behaves much in the same way.

So... It seems like the most likely explanation is that the update procedure might have borked something to do with min-antenna-gain. And as neat as it is, @normis pls fix?

I think it was said that min-antenna-gain depends on factory software version (or was it routerboot version? ... lately it's the same, so ...).

My audience says "factory-software: 6.45.8" and "factory-firmware: 6.47.9" (which strikes me odd to see such a huge discrepancy in these two versions).
My hAP ac2 says "factory-software: 6.42.3" and "factory-firmware: 6.42.3" (seems fine).

I can't check if min-antenna-gain is set on my hAP ac2 ... because it doesn't have any wifi/wireless package installed.

Both hAP ac²s: factory-software 6.43.10, factory-firmware 6.43.10
Audience: factory-software 6.45.8, factory-firmware 6.45.9

I also have another more different hAP ac2 with 6.45.9 as both factory-software and factory-firmware, and I just confirmed it has no min-antenna-gain as well.

Welp, I guess I just have old routers. Which isn't particularly surprising, but I thought at least the Audience should be new enough to have min-antenna-gain, since it says it's r2.

Thanks for clearing this out.

Edit: I think I should also apologize for my confusion... Which I do apologize for.
