v6.49.15 [stable] is released!

Thu Apr 25, 2024 1:57 pm

RouterOS version 6.49.15 has been released in the "v6 stable" channel!

Before an upgrade:
1) Remember to make backup/export files before an upgrade and save them on another storage device;
2) Make sure the device will not lose power during upgrade process;
3) Device has enough free storage space for all RouterOS packages to be downloaded.

What's new in 6.49.15 (2024-Apr-24 16:04):

*) defconf - updated wireless password handling;
*) system - improved system stability for RBSXTsq5nD;

To upgrade, click "Check for updates" at /system package in your RouterOS configuration interface, or head to our download page: http://www.mikrotik.com/download

If you experience version related issues, then please send supout file from your router to support@mikrotik.com. File must be generated while a router is not working as suspected or after some problem has appeared on the device

Please keep this forum topic strictly related to this particular RouterOS release.

All those defconf updates for 6.49.x are probably not going to bring anything.
Who is going to update their device and then reset to defaults?
Even after buying new devices that is not part of the usual installation procedure for most people...
1. start device, go through default config ritual and set password
2. update to newest version
3. update firmware
4. again reset to defaults

Only people doing that will ever see the updates presented here. And then only when they remain on v6.

These versions are of course installed on routers in the factory. So new units will have fixed/improved default configuration.

My experience is that all devices that I buy come with RouterOS that is a couple of versions down, so I immediately upgrade them to latest stable.
But for defconf changes that is already too late, unless the procedure above is followed.
I always to that, but I doubt the average customer does.

Example: I recently bought 3 RB5009UPr+S+. They were delivered Mar 1st 2024 but came with RouterOS 7.8.
RouterOS 7.9 was released on May 2nd, 2023. So apparently there is quite some lag in the chain.

There's no point in crying over spilt milk, better get a fix now than never, I always follow the procedure Update - Update Routerboard - Reset to no default, and let's be honest average user wouldn't really buy Mikrotik. Nobody ain't perfect and there's really no reason to be, otherwise they wouldn't cover shitload of market around the EU. There are much bigger issues in the world like Windows and yet the whole world uses it, Mikrotik is doing a damn good job now if you ask me. Giving them dumb philosophy about what made sense to fix or not really isn't gonna help anything, there was probably a demand for the fix in the v6 and they fixed it.

Do you still manufacture devices with v6 preinstalled?

I wondered about that too, but it seems like some old models that never had a hardware change in the past years still use v6.
(not that having a router with v6 guarantees that a new one that you buy also comes with v6, some models have been forced upgraded to v7 apparently due to internal changes that aren't published)

Arm based devices must use v7, there is no option for them. Others can be downgraded v6 no matter what os they have afaik.
For abandoned os last few versions pointless for me.

Indeed, my RB4011, hAP ac2 and LHG5ac all came with v6. But probably new instances (when still made) will be v7.

I don't think so...
From the Mikrotik download page, v6.49.15 is available for both ARM and ARM 64 devices.
And my RB4011iGS+RM (currently 6.49.8) shows that it is available for upgrade from the Packages page in WinBox
.

Yes an older RB4011 can run v6, but I think when you buy one today it will come with v7 and cannot be downgraded to v6.
That is also true for a couple of other models. Sometimes changes are made to the hardware without ever telling us (e.g. via some "v2" addition to the type) and the corresponding software support is not backported to v6.

*) defconf - updated wireless password handling;
*) system - improved system stability for RBSXTsq5nD;
More details what exactly has been fixed?

First change - does it only apply to newer devices that come with non-empty default password (as required by EU regulations), or are all devices worth upgrading (and will get some non-empty default password now? but no software update can add a sticker...)?

Second change - is it really specific to SXTsq5nD only? LHG5 and Disc Lite5 don't have the same hardware inside, just different antenna?

And you still forgot my #[SUP-126246]: Winbox IPv6 ND reachable time units ? Cosmetic bug, but introduced in 6.47.10 which was a long-term release.

That is not true, most 32bit ARM devices used to come with v6 and can run it still, although few have the hardware upgraded versions that cannot run v6 anymore, on the other hand CRS500 series switches are not ARM but MIPSBE and they require v7 because switch chip is not supported by v6...
