Ubiquiti SR9 support

Fri Feb 24, 2006 12:28 am

Anyone know if the SR9 card is going to be supported by Mikrotik? (900Mhz Atheros)

http://ubnt.com/supper_range9.php4

I haven't seen anything on the forums regarding it.

It's been discussed around here, just search for sr9.

I think it's very likely that it will work fine, since it appears to be a standard Atheros AR5413 (same as the EMP/SMP cards, and I think the R52 as well), just with a custom RF stage.

We've been using it on 5.8GHz. Working very well, being 400mw and all. It does get a bit more hot compared to a CM9 or normal Atheros card, but its worth having. It works on any 2.9.x ROS. (Haven't yet tried it on 2.8)

Somehow I doubt that, it being 900Mhz and all. :wink:

(Not to mention that no one I know of has seen anything more than a prototype as of yet.)

We have tested it and it is really working at 900Mhz. As I understant they are converting the 2.4Ghz to 900Mhz....
Next week we will test in real enviromet (few km distance) and then we will have some results.
For now we can get approx: 5Mbps using 5Mhz channel; 10Mbps using 10Mhz channel; 20-25Mbps using G mode; 7Mbps using B mode.

For now in the RouterOS to get is working you should use these frequencies:
2422Mhz -> 922Mhz
2427Mhz -> 917Mhz
2432Mhz -> 912Mhz
2437Mhz -> 907Mhz

It is a workaround for v2.9.x till the v2.10. In v2.10 you will be able to select the 900Mhz frequencies directly.

2422Mhz -> 922Mhz
2427Mhz -> 917Mhz
2432Mhz -> 912Mhz

I may be reading this wrong, but it seems the sequence of frequencies doesn't match between 900 and 2.4. 2.4 ascends, 900 decends.

Is this right?

Thanks

As with all radios, NLOS performance will be entirely depend on what is causing the NLOS. Trees?, Buildings?, Hills?, Walls?, Multiple?, Thick obstructions?, Thin obstructions?, Fully blocked Fresnel?, 50% blocked Fresnel?, etc....

It is pretty much imposable to pre-determine NLOS performance, without knowing _exactly_ what is in the way. And even then, it isn't easy.

That said, 900Mhz will be better than 2.4Ghz at getting around things. Also OFDM helps compensate for multi-path, so in theory, it _should_ perform better than existing 900Mhz systems.

You've got the answer in the upper post.

Just buy equipment and test ... Nobody can say for sure.

i will but i m looking for estimation
example i have link @ 6mbps arround 12km @ 2.4ghz 200mw 20db antenna both sides
if i replace it with the 900mhz 700mw whats the expected speed i will got? if we consider my antenna is somthing like 15 db

I'd recommend that they figure out everything ubiquiti plans on doing and supporting it, whatever it is.

Well that would be nice but back in reality UBNT is a PITA to deal with direct, getting support directly from them is a mission and i doubt they would be willing to hand out details of their plans to MT.

I know of a group of people in my country tring to get some samples on loan to test for a country wide deployment, all up they were looking at buying 10k unit's+ of SR2 and SR5's, UBNT took a month to reply to their phone calls or e-mails and then insisted that they buy 100unit's - needless to say the group didnt and looked at other options

First of all - UBNT has been awesome to deal with as far as we were concerned. I do not know about your friends and what they were proposing, maybe there was some mis-communication, I don't know. Do you think that maybe they were trying to protect their dealer stucture that is in place? That is what a good company does. We have dealt with their support when MT was overdriving the SR2 cards. They were more than helpful, and helped to prove to MT that the problem was with them. They could have said it was MT's problem, and went on. They worked directly with MT to solve the issue. A rep from UBNT also occassional visits the forums to see about any comments that are made, to be proactive. You will see him post - although very rarely. His goal is to make sure the product is working properly - not increase sales. I have talked to him and have been very impressed with the company. I am not saying they are perfect, they have had troubles with production. Initially they did have some problems with a few cards, but they have corrected the issues. Try dealing with Engenious if you want to see PITA, they have no answers, and really don't care.

I'm surprised that UBNT hasn't tested their cards with Mikrotik already (from another forum it's obvious they haven't)...seems like it'd help them get the word out.

Anyway, where are the speed, range, and overall tests and opinions people? Looking forward to hearing how these do in the real world. Want to try some out but kind of holding back to see how the first round goes.

Beccara -- if it is true, I feel very embarrased as the president/founder of the company. Please e-mail sales@ubnt.com or support@ubnt.com anytime with what you need and reference this post. We'll make sure you are taken care of.

Sorry for the trouble.

interexus,
Uldis already wrote about frequency configuration, as well sticker is provided with SR9 frequency chart explanation.
You have to set correct frequency channel, and other configuration is the same as for regular a/b/g links.

You do realize the "free" band starts at 903, not 900.

I've found this page very informative about who's-using-what:

so I just got my SR9 and have been playiong around.
When I put the unit right next to each other I get great signal and get great throughput.. around 24meg UDP.

When I take them about 25 feet apart into another building.. IT falls to pieces and I can barely keep a connection, with ping times in the 500+ range

My noise floor for all channels is around -78.. uhg..

I use 900 canopy in other palces.. but the interface sucks.. I want MK!!
I also have a Avlan 900 P-t-P setup and that works perfect.. but it is only p-t-p

I am using 9db yagi antennas and mini-itx board that work great with any other cards.
My card is set to B/G

I played with all 4 channels
2422
2427
2432
2437

2437 was the only channel that I could maintain a connection but I cant get any ping across

what does this mean
-----------------For now we can get approx: 5Mbps using 5Mhz channel; 10Mbps using 10Mhz channel; 20-25Mbps using G mode; 7Mbps using B mode.-----------

Im alittle confused.. I thought we were in 900mhz space? THis makes me think we should treat it like B or G in which case I can say that B always seems to work better than G for outdoor long range shots.

SHould I set it to B and have 11meg bitrate?

What antennas are you using?

I tired all the different bands, and the only one that would work at the 25t distance was B.

THe noise floor is a bit concerning, I took the unit and drove it all through the mountains with no antenna plugged into it and my noise floor never changed from around -80.. it went as low as -83 and as high as -78.

this noise floor seems like it would make it impossible to work at any distance. the SNR would just be to bad.

the card is rated to goto -93
Is the noise floor reading perhaps wrong?

I have 3 card in 3 different boxes

1 Wrap
1 RB500
1 Mini-itx

I drove the unit through the mountains and down to town. I think the noise must change in a 15 mile drive into valleys and such. and for this test no antenna was connected.
Also I have a Avalan 900 p-t-p that works perfect and a Motortolla canopy that works. So that makes me think that if it was noise then those would not work either

In my drive I covered 15 miles and went from 2500ft elevation down to 500ft elevation. Im sure the noise should have changed somewhere in there if it wa a pager 900 tower.

You are shooting yourself in the foot. Connect an antenna and get the radio/antenna out of your vehicle into the open air. Your mileage will improve and your life will become golden.

Wandering around with 27dB radios with no antennas is not a good idea.

Hmmm. Don't think I'm going to bite on that one, so that would suggest the main difference between us right now is that I have a working 5.4km SR9 link through fairly heavy trees and an obstructed fresnel and you have a radio with no antenna attached? :P

I just happen to have a little data. This is an area with a lot of Trango and WaveRider 900 operating.

This is a production shot we set up June 13th, 5.4km or a little more than 3 miles long. Been running like a top ever since. RSSIs drop about 4dB in the rain, which considering the number of trees its going though seems about right. Throughput is about 3Mbit in each direction or 1.5 in both at once.

This shot is across water and treed land. Tree heights are 20-30M.

The customer, Donelda, has about 30M of trees from her house to where the land drops off down to the lake. This is dense deciduous forest crowns. In addition, the lower half of the Fresnel is obstructed by trees growing on two ridges between the customer and the AP.

AP is an RB532 with SR9, customer is a RB112 with SR9. It has been running June 13th with zero problems so far. Its running on horizontal polarity, Superpass 9dB horiz 120* sector to M2 17dB yagi.

We are very pleased!!

wow that is great to see.. I see your noise floor is around -88. The card specs at -93 so that is a little high.. but I am encouraged to just go out and set mine up and see how it goes.. thanks so much for the info

one question though.. what band did you choose? that is not noted in yoour config

In reality, if you can find a noise floor as good as -88 in the 900 band you are doing REALLY well. We are just lucky here and are using horizontal which eliminates much of the V-pol noise that is ubiquitous in 900, pun intended.

Here are the full radio card configs. We are using 2GHz-5MHz channels.

name="wlan2900HSec" mtu=1500 mac-address=00:15:6D:90:02:70 arp=enabled
disable-running-check=no interface-type=Atheros AR5213
radio-name="LL 900 120 H Sector" mode=ap-bridge ssid="CandleLL" area=""
