RSTP on the bridges works so smoothly...I can pull out and replug any fiber and it always re-establishes the connection....however it is more elegant to use the switch chips, and it removes CPU load.

Actually, adding the routes for the loopback IPs did the trick, thank you. For testing purposes I set up a PPPoE server on the VPLS interface on Router1, and a PPPoE client on the other end at Router3, and it establishes like a charm.
