Re: 60Ghz for elevator shaft link

Thanks. I agree there's "no reason it wouldn't work", but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing. I've only worked with 60Ghz on traditional fixed PTP links, so I don't know how it would behave if one endpoint is constantly moving (vibration, variation in alignment, doppler frequen...

60Ghz for elevator shaft link

Customer wants to bring connectivity into the cabin of a 11-storey elevator. The only way we can do this is to use the old trick of placing a bridge unit at the top of the elevator shaft pointing straight down, and a second bridge unit on top of the cabin facing straight up. I know this can be done ...

What's the point? Route everything that comes into the router over PPPoE and than you don't need any filters. The point is so that nothing comes into or out of my router except PPPoE traffic. What is the use case for this setup?
Ensuring only PPPOE traffic reaches my ISP.

It would also be a use case for ISPs in the forum to secure their PPPOE ACs, they might not want to put their ACs in a bridge.

Indeed, and I have also escalated this with the ISP, but if it was an ISP issue, why would some of the CCRs work while others don't? (They're all on the same ISP). Also, why would some CCRs see the OSPF neighbors, receive the LSAs, but don't install the routes? If the ISP was blocking traffic with t...

Sounds like something on the switch side of the remote building. When you reboot, the port on the switch does not down/up, but when you power cycle it does, so it gets reset. Do you have a manageable switch by any chance? Check/replace the switch with a dumb switch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Container terminal has bucketloads of reflections. More coverage = more reflections. You don't want a lot of coverage. Use 5ghz

Mikrotik as a station uses break-before-make roaming. In other words it's the worst roamer you can have. Look for client devices designed specifically for roaming.

You're probably thinking about WISPr with EAP-SIM. Nothing special about mikrotik, just configure hotspot as normal and use radius for hotspot authentication.

The sim authentication magic is done by your radius server.

The radius server will need access to the provider's HLR.

Wall Jack APs

I vote for Ruckus units. Mikrotik's lack of antenna diversity, auto channel coordination and auto tx power adjustments, combined with a lack of centralised control (dude is a monitor, and full of bugs), make MT a very bad choice when you need to manage hundreds of APs. Stick them in a wall plate and...

In short, use sierra wireless and be ready to try out a few different sierra cards, model support is very hit and miss.

Use mikrotik's API for your application. You will be able to retrieve all the data presented in the GUI, which includes network I'd, signal strength and name.

What you're looking for is DM-VPN, a brilliantly simple protocol, but one which only exists in Cisco routers (since Cisco invented it). Do a bandwidth test or a long ping flood. When a wireless connection is idle (no data being transmitted), it is slowed down to the lowest data rate it supports. When data starts flowing, the wireless interface tries to negotiate the faster speeds.

how about using a little switch connected to port 1, then connect the modems to the switch?

I know it's not ideal because you're adding a point of failure, but it may be a quick stop-gap solution.

Re: Routerboard 750G vs Speedstream 4300 modem ethernet issu

Try a different physical port. Usually port 1 uses the CPU's built in Ethernet interface while 2-5 use a dedicated Ethernet chip. So if you're using Eth1 on the RB750, try moving to Eth2 instead, and vice versa.

This used to happen to us all the time with the RB532 and some DSL or Cable modems.

Over 1 Year Uptime.

Hi all, just got into an RB600 of one of our clients and noticed an uptime of 381 days!. This is an RB600 AP installed outdoors running RouterOS v3.9 with two R52H cards installed. It's installed about 20m away from the sea in direct sunlight with 40 degree (C) summers. One client has been connected...

Just because ping works, you can't assume all inbound traffic is allowed. Like I said before, most 3G providers block many inbound traffic, they would probably allow inbound pings because some outbound applications may fail if they blocked inbound pings. Also, by default MikroTik web interface runs ...

If you didn't configure any firewall blocking, you can just access it from the internet the same way you access it from the internal lan. MikroTik doesn't know or care about what is internal and what is external.. it's all just a bunch of interfaces.

Glad I helped :) Now that you're saying you're connecting using a GPRS/3G modem, I'm not surprised it didn't work. MikroTik is not really built with roaming in mind, so it doesn't work very well in a standard configuration.

However there were some people on this forum who were trying to use it for streaming video feeds off F1 cars, I don't know how that worked out but you could do a search.

A repeater appears just like any other AP to a client.

The only difference between a repeater and a regular AP is that the regular AP connects to the network via a wire, while a repeater uses another AP to hop off from.

Probably it will never work. Your PC is doing NAT (ie change your rb750's IP to the PC's own IP). PPTP rarely works when there's NAT in the way.

Try to use OVPN instead.

not any mechanical issues if some care is taken. CAT5/CAT6 cable is very robust and forgiving, especially if it will be used for 100Mbits or less.
