Re: [Discussion] MikroTik configuration abstraction complexity

What's strange about MikroTik as a network vendor is we don't see them in IETF meetings, we don't see them in NANOG, SANOG, UKNOG, NLNOG etc. Other vendors, small or big, attend these events, especially IETF, since all are interested to mingle, improve, and make business deals, but MikroTik employe...

Only some of them. The CRS309, CRS317, CRS354 and some of the CRS326 models (high density 10/2.5 ones) have support for offload of MPLS forwarding as well as push/pop/swap operations, with limitations of course (its an ASIC after all) The point is Mikrotik need to implement these features in both Fa...

Re: hardware offload of mpls, is it limited?

Mikrotik need offloading of the following MPLS operations:

- Label Forwarding
- Label Push/Pop/Swap

For not only one label, but multiple in Hardware and FastPath.

This is a major feature set omission that is holding Mikrotik back in the Service Provider market.

FastPath isn't going to cut it in 2024.

They need to use DPDK/VPP for line-rate software dataplane. Maybe XDP for ingress filtering.
They can use whatever they want, as long as it gets the job done.

I would first check with your ISP whether they support IPoE AKA DHCP. That will dramatically lower the overhead on the Mikrotik router.

It is quite uncommon for ISP's to only use PPPoE on FTTP services.

Maybe this is a modular baseboard that can be populated with modules e.g. 802.11ay, 10gigabit networking.

Or maybe a storage/container platform.

The hardware supports it, however Mikrotik's software implementation does not.

Is MLAG working better with these latest releases? There are still issues in rc4 with MLAG. MPLS traffic can be load balanced across the members of a bonding interface if you use balance-rr instead of 802.3ad.
It sure can, but please remember this will only work reliably when it is Mikrotik <---> Mikrotik or Mikrotik <---> Linux with both ends configured for balance-rr

Hi Maris/ Raimonds

I can understand why filters are different in v7.

What might make the changes easier to digest for users is a graphical "filter builder" in WinBox that allows you to select the various attributes, operators and actions then builds the filter statement for you.

Just an FYI there are more modern and better replacements for DPDK that are now built into the Linux Kernel like io_uring and eBPF that do not peg CPU cores at 100% to handle interrupts.

Mikrotik would be wise to use these.
