Rextended, we've tried it both ways. Doing all the shaping at the border results in the router getting overloaded so we distribute the load.

And we are doing okay. The next time, if you want to ask a question about our strategy, just ask the question. Don't be a *****.

Actually the R52HN is going to give you about as good as chance as any to reach that kind of throughput. If you could use some dishes with higher gain that would help. The best practice is assign static ips outside the range of the dhcp server. If it does issue an ip you have assigned as static, there will be a challenge.

You need to turn the power down or you are going to ruin your cards.

23Mbps is about what to expect from an optimal 802.11a link.

The fact that you can't ping http://www.google.com shows that it can not find the gateway to internet.
I figured the reason it could not ping www.google.com is because it can't resolve the ip address?

After storms, backhaul link signal strength greatly reduced

I have a 9 mile ptp link utilizing R5H cards, one on an RB600 and the other on an RB433, each connected to a 27db grid. Originally the link had a very good signal, around -55dbm both ways. After strong storms over the weekend the signal strength is now in the -87dbm range both ways. I'm wondering if...

Re: Do you limit client distances from access point?

I think my post was a little confusing. Let me try to explain myself better. I'll try to give an example. Let's say I have an access point where most of the clients are 2-5 miles away. There is a potential customer that lives 15-20 miles away. From his location the signal strength is very decent. My...

Do you limit client distances from access point?

On a PtMP setup, how far away from an access point is too far, regardless of signal strength? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that if a client connects from too great of distance even if it has a good signal it will negatively affect throughput for the other clients that are much closer, d...

Re: Need help with network layout

I have found that placing 2 cards of the same band, even if separated by a card using a different band can still cause interference, but it was not enough to break the links as I was operating two APs on 2.4GHz and a single 5GHz link. The 5GHz link was not a problem, it was cross interference betwe...

Re: Need help with network layout

Does separating 2 of the same band radios with a radio of a different band work fine then? Otherwise it seems that the RB433 is only suited for a 2 radio setup. I suppose you could also use 900mhz but that would be a less common scenario.

Re: Need help with network layout

On the RB433, if I put an A card between 2 b/g cards will I still experience the interference? I tried searching the forum and I didn't see any information on the interference issue. Edit: Whoops, I didn't notice you already had thought of the idea of using a shield card to isolate the 2 radios. May...

Re: Apparently Impossible Config due to 802.11 Limitations?

I have accomplished this same thing a few times with two CPEs and a crossover cable. For example, in this situation I would put the first CPE on 10.0.41.2 and the second one on 10.0.41.3 and connect to the second one and set my gateway as 10.0.41.1, and everything would route properly. I did pretty...

Re: Need help with network layout

Hi popcorn I'm in similar situation as I'm researching for my project as well. Here's a few things I learned that might be of interest: - using RB433 with multiple 11b/g cards to save $$ appears to be a bad idea due to board design (interference), however it works fine for 5Ghz backhaul and 2Ghz AP...

Re: Need help with network layout

Chris That is also why there are so many Training courses available. Because it is much easier to learn about what Mikrotik can do while being trained than doing it the hard way, on your own. But, then again, how did I learn in the first place? By playing with it and building real networks - which ...

Re: CCQ decreasing if traffic is increasing

Are the RB493 and the RB411 in close proximity to each other or are they in line with each other in relation to your access point?

Re: Need help with network layout

I don't think I will be hiring a consultant. While I do have my share of headaches :D I am usually able to work through them, and it always ends up being a learning experience. I'm afraid if I hired a consultant that initially it would be nice but in the end I wouldn't learn near as much, and I woul...

Need help with network layout

I have included a picture of how I am imagining laying out my wireless network for a wisp I am setting up. I am a rookie when it comes to this and don't have the best grasp on the router os software yet. Still learning :) . I want to use mikrotik hardware(RB433 and RB600's) for all of my AP's. For m...
