Yes, IGMP snooping is realy needed. Mikrotik has some nice hardware with switch chips, usable as prefect CPE or in "last mile" access layer, but without support for IGMP snooping it can't be used, for example, in scenarios, where multicast IPTV is used. And if IGMP snooping... then continue with IGM...
