Re: HotSpot Design

Use a signal detection tool with your smartphone to see if you get signal everywhere. Better yet, use the client registration list to see your smartphone's signal strength from the radios. The access points can typically provide a stronger signal as they typically have higher power transmitters and...

Re: I have a stupid IDEA

You mean to daisy chain multiple units from the same power supply? Usually where POE out is provided you can power a second one, but not indefinitely. You are going to hit the power limits of not only the power supply (which you are trying to augment with a 5 or 10A version) but also the injector, t...

Re: WIFI Project - WIFI on Ferries

VHF, and EPIRB are also worth noting but probably not going to be a significant concern to either interfere with them or be interfered by them. We do have 3.65ghz available for WISPs here, I don't know if you would classify as a WISP or not and what you have for local regulations but it may be more ...

Re: Vlan tagging in Point to Point with SXT Lite 5

Yeah I read it entirely differently. I read it as Switch (Vlans 1 & 300) -> RadioA (vlans 1 & 300, management on 1) -> Radio B (vlans 1 & 300, 1 management on 1, 300 bridged to ethernet to make it untagged) It's quicker to do with airMax stuff, yes, but I do it on both regularly and the ...

Re: Addresses per Mac In Hotspot

it depends on how your access points are connected and configured. It would be best to test with either 1 or 2 and try to connect simultaneously 5 clients behind a single access point other than the hotspot controller and see if it works. If it doesn't, increase the number to the amount you want. If...

If your hotspot clients are connecting via a bridge/switch or another access point (that cannot be seen directly from the controller which may depend on the configuration and functionality of those devices), the hotspot controller may not see the mac addresses of the clients, rather that of the brid...

In the Ubiquiti ones you can specify the "Management VLAN: Enable" then in the "VLAN ID:" box enter a number. For Mikrotik you have lots of options, which require a bit more understanding of what's happening behind the scenes with VLAN'ing and the other networking components/serv...

Re: RB751U-2HnD joke in a box

Is your other access point still running when you are testing the RB751U-2HnD? (as in are they both sitting next to each other?) For the frequency I generally find it best to avoid 2412 and 2462 as although the router seems to support it well, not every client device does when I test it. It's too ba...

Is the QRT G going to be just plastic like the SXT/SEXTANT/OmniTik/912G Outdoor or is it going to have some sort of RF Shielding? That has been the main obstacle preventing me from pursuing the Routerboard's integrated radios.

That helps a lot, I thought you were talking about two different access points. So there is just a single device, with a single bridge. Is the DHCP server assigned to that bridge as well? You may need to make sure that your DHCP server does not have "Add ARP for Leases" checked, even if th...

Running in series (higher voltage, lower current) provides higher efficiency in the cabling (important for long runs). If the batteries are being directly connected to each other it will prevent a failed battery from discharging the working one below it's rated depth of discharge. It would be best t...

If you are still looking to do it yourself, there is conductive glue which you can use instead of soldering. It's not as strong as solder and has higher resistance but it will probably work. Most importantly it is going to depend on your budget, expected radio pattern (is it going to be sitting in the middle of the area and broadcasting outwards with an omni-directional antenna or sitting in a corner and broadcasting in a cone), and aesthetics. There are many options for boards of varyi...

I would suggest looking into LED light pipes (or light guide) it's basically a lens or hard fiber optic that is used commonly in electronics to have light shine from an LED on a board to the front panel. I have a few sites setup like that with 2011's or 751s and it works well, with staggered frequencies. I am assuming you're talking about 2.4ghz so in that case I use only 2417, 2437, 2457 as many apple products seem to be flaky on 2412/2462.
