Re: Border router, looking for hardware

Sorry for recommending an invalid solution; I rarely do that many Layer 7 rules, and when I do they are on my x86 PC routers instead. If your current rules and packet rate (pps uses more CPU than mbps) is using 80% on the faster rb450G, then a rb1100 would be a better fit for you. Actually it looks ...

Re: Border router, looking for hardware

You should be able to get away with a faster 400 series RouterBoard. Look at the routerboards: rb450G, rb493AH or rb493G. These have plenty of RAM for any size of OSPF network, and enough CPU to handle your rules & packet rate. The rb1100 would be needed if you were planning on getting a full BG...

Try a test from the rb433 through the PoE. Perhaps heavy wireless traffic causes more CPU compared to only heavy Ethernet traffic. Also, do you have a lot of firewall rules? Re: can Connection tracking be disabled...

IMHO, no reason to disable it. Routerboard throughput comparison Both rb133 & rb532 show 55-70% increase in speed. The rb4xx, rb600 & rb1000 routerboards should have enough CPU to keep connection tracking enabled while also maxing out 100mbit Fast Ethernet ports. But keep it enabled if you ...

Re: Hardware Specs for Router

Mikrotik RouterOS includes MRTG style graphs for Interfaces, Queues & Resources (CPU,Mem,Disk). For 40M down & 10Mbit up, you could use a routerboard . It would use less power than a PC router for longer UPS runtimes. A rb600 & rb564 daughterboard would give you 3 Gigabit & 6 10/100 ...

They had the 2.9.x, 2.8.x, 2.7.x, etc. series before 3.0. full support for 802.11n and WiMax I think Mikrotik have stated they will both be supported when they are supported in Linux with stable drivers. Try this: Logout and then log back in after un-checking the 'Load Previous Session' box in the winbox loader.

I think a clean session may help.

Also make sure you are running the latest version of winbox.

Re: How to lock rates to b only when using 5 or 10 mhz channel w

I believe the radio chips do not support 802.11b when running 5,10 or 40Mhz channels. It might be the DSS/CCK 802.11b modulation can not run on different sized channels like the OFDM 802.11a or OFDM 802.11g can. The 802.11b protocol is different from the OFDM 802.11a/g. OFDM is made of up 52 subcari...

Re: telnet to localhost just times out

Don't use 0.0.0.0, that isn't the IP address of localhost; try 127.0.0.1 instead. As for telneting to the IP address of ether1, you might have a firewall filter rule blocking the traffic. Try adding an 'allow' rule in the input chain for a source address of your ether1 IP. There might be something e...

I thought that 802.11g had the same 22 mhz channels, G-Turbo has the wider 40Mhz channels.

While using 802.11b for a Point to Point link I have seen speeds up to 3-4 Mbps. But for an AP with multiple users, 2.5 Mpbs might be the most you ever see.
