Re: Sofware VLAN/Bridge on RuterOS explained.

A "vlan interface" can be seen as a virtual switch/bridge port which untags frames as it receives them from the bridge and tags them as it sends them to the bridge. So it is necessary for L3 access to its respective VLAN in both the "old school" and "new school" approa...

Re: Sofware VLAN/Bridge on RuterOS explained.

Thanks for the quick reply! how does box-2 tag and route 192.168.50.0/24 traffic to box-1? It doesn't route, it uses VLAN tags, switch makes sure packets arrive at desired destination. To make it work, VAP needs to be tagged and the trunk port towards box-2 as well (in addition to untagged). On box-...

Re: Mikrotik VDSL / DSL Modem?

The ISP definitely supports RFC4638 as using the TG589 for VDSL+PPPoE allows non-fragmented 1500-byte pings. (I say "ISP" but it's probably true for any ISP using OpenReach network). RouterOS allegedly has RFC4638 support since version 6.33, albeit with some bug-fixes since then! But you h...

Considering frequency allocation is a major limit on 5G, especially if you're going to use 80MHz 802.11ac channels, then adding more chains is a big plus. I'd find it way easier to add more antennas with physical separation than finding more frequency allocation. 4x4 MIMO 802.11ac or 802.11n miniPCI...

Re: WDS Mesh

Not a lot of mesh help out there it seems. I did run a mesh for a while but ran into issues where some nodes would 'break' and require a reboot to rejoin the mesh. Sometimes it got so bad the whole mesh would collapse. However, it is quite nice to have your network self-route, self-heal and be on a ...

Just to follow up from my bug post about invisible/immortal files with super-long filenames... If your RouterBOARD hasn't already run out of hdd space then you can apply this workaround: NOTE: all files on your routerboard will be wiped but you will keep your configuration! download netinstall and t...

So far: create a virtual ethernet interface create a metarouter instance (kiss goodbye to 24MB of memory) assign virtual ethernet interface to metarouter instance add virtual ethernet and real ethernet to a bridge interface now you can ssh to the virtual ethernet's IP not THAT useful as to use meshi...

Re: AP MESH using Ethernet (not WDS)

I forgot about that short window just after reboot - sorry I could have told you about that. It is very hit-and-miss though. I guess the main point is to let [at least ethernet] mesh interfaces to accept unmeshed traffic too. Maybe there's a configuration which will allow both - e.g. virtual interfa...

Re: AP MESH using Ethernet (not WDS)

Wow, I was just about to ask about this issue and do some research too. I've been burnt before by having RouterBoards configured with meshing not being able to access them once that particular RouterBoard is meshed. I eventually swapped to a routed network but now that's becoming too much to manage ...

Re: SEXTANT G 5HPnD polarity

I might be a bit late now but I just remembered you can adjust the ht-txchains and ht-rxchains parameters for the wireless interface. I think chain 0 is attached to the horizontal antenna but you might need to take the Sextant apart to check that. Also I remember reading somewhere that you can't use...

Re: SEXTANT G 5HPnD polarity

You can unclip the Sextant around the edges to gain access to the insides. Having done that you can easily swap the pigtails over or even replace the RouterBOARD inside with a different version.

Re: 802.11 VS NV2

I read on the forum recently that the newest version(s) of RouterOS 6.x have had some improvements to NV2, particularly with latency. Other people recommend using Nstreme instead for more consistent/lower latency.

Also, a noise floor of -120dBm is better/quieter than -102dBm.

I had this problem and ended up swapping out the RouterBoard and the antenna cables. I suspect the problem in my case was water ingress too - can't be too paranoid about water!

Re: NV2 locked to 6Mbit --> Known issue

Out of interest, have you tried setting all of the following to an empty string on both client and AP: basic-rates-b supported-rates-b basic-rates-a/g supported-rates-a/g Just an idea because 6Mbps seems to be listed as an 802.11a/b/g rate, not an 802.11n-like HT rate. Also, I've removed all the a/b...

I'm no expert, I've never used netinstall and I don't even have Windows, BUT... If you read this from the WIKI: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Netinstall It suggests, along with your routerboard's output "trying bootp protocol........ failed", that you can re-flash the firmware/kerne...

Re: when will we see

A quick search of WikiPedia says that a mini-PCI is 32bit @ 33MHz with a maximum bitrate of 1.067Gbps. Not exactly enough to deal with 3x3 MIMO 802.11ac for example, but maybe enough for an 802.11n link? Even mini-PCIe with its one lane "should" do 5Gbps (PCIe rev 2). I suspect a proportio...

Re: mini PCI-E Intel AC 7260 HMVG

From the image posted above you can see the text "indoor use only" and that their frequency range is only 5.15GHz to 5.35GHz. It's probably not as high power as some of the [non-AC] MikroTik cards either. You can install DD-WRT on an Asus RT-AC66U and maybe use that as a 'dumb' point-to-po...

Re: CCTV Camera Setup for viewing online usin mikrotik RB750

I was excited when I saw the topic but wasn't what I had hoped for. It would be very handy to have a basic USB camera driver - for those USB cameras that don't need Windows drivers, etc.

Imagine being able to check your line-of-sight, weather conditions, etc. from the RB itself.

Re: Is hardware/button reset the same as /sys reset-config?

That's a good point. I guess those of us who don't use Windows can fish for the MAC address with tcpdump and the like, looking for UDP packets to port 5678. However it does sound like you're confirming the way in is via the mac-telnet protocol. Thanks.

Is hardware/button reset the same as /sys reset-config?

It would be nice to have an authoritative answer for people who have RouterBoards that require climbing to get to! This question is also motivated by a recent experience of using /sys reset-config and having the RB decide that item numbers (mostly wireless interfaces) didn't exist even though a &quo...

Replies about HWMP+ meshing seem to be very rare - as if hardly anyone uses it... However, as all your nodes are on the same subnet, why not just add them all the same mesh (see http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Interface/HWMPplus ) and let it work out the connections. Set the RB951G and OmniTik ...

I was going to reply to this thread earlier but wasn't sure if my case was relevant. However, now that you've mentioned rebooting then I can say I've hit the same problem. In my case it's on a ROS 6.1 RB435 and it's the static ::/0 ("default") route that I need to disable/enable each time ...

Any chance we can have some more values available via SNMP for registered wireless clients?

For example (from the "/int wire reg print stats" output):

frames
hw-frames
rx-ccq
tx-ccq
