Re: The Dude is dead. Move on.

Is the Dude being developed or not? I have run into a functional issue using SNMP where Dude only supports DES encryption for SNMPv3 and the device I need to monitor only uses AES. What is Mikrotik's issue with developing Dude? Lots of people would pay for it to keep development going. It's a great ...

P2P AresWarez Troubles

I'm currently using 2.8.28 and blocking all-p2p, but a new app 'AresWarez' is getting through. Does anyone know if the latest version of RouterOS blocks AresWarez? Is there a way I can block it while I'm still running 2.8.28?

Thanks,
Mike

IP Firewall - block all IPs except

Mikrotik Router 2.8.28 I use the mikrotik box for PPPoE connections. I want to block all ip addresses except those I have setup for users. What kind of firewall rule or rules can I use to do this? I have a forward rule now that basically says: drop all 192.168/16 on all interfaces. How can I do this...

Fixed. It seems my ISP had some router issues that have been resolved - my setup is now working.

firewall rules hotspot gw

I have a MikroTik box setup as a hotspot gateway. It has 3 interfaces: ether1 is connected to internal net for RADIUS and internal web requests ether2 is connected to wireless AP ether3 is connected to Internet. Everything is working except for getting to external web sites. I can authenticate again...

Also, will the drop all p2p line work?
p2p=all-p2p action=drop log=yes

Or do I have to put in a line for p2p=warez explicitly?

Great! Now I just need to upgrade to 2.8.18. What's the best way to upgrade a Flash IDE system?

Thanks,

Edgars, Can you fill me in on the steps I need to take or send me a link to instructions for how to drop the ares galaxy traffic? I searched the MikroTik web site and went through the RouterOS manual, but haven't been able to find a good set of steps to follow. Also, will these steps work with my 2....

So, will there be an update to RouterOS that will enable it to block Ares Galaxy P2P? Could it be just a small update of some kind that doesn't require a point release?

Montana,

A bit off topic: I am a user in Montana, too, and I know there are other users, so I'm thinking about starting a "MikroTik Montana" user group. I am in Helena, where are you?

email me here if you're interested: mikesemail@myrealbox.com

Yes, and it's been working for those, but what about ARES?

This is the one I'm having trouble with now.

P2P Ares blocking?

I have recently discovered some of my users are using ARES P2P software to download/share files. I want to block all P2P traffic, and implemented the rule 'p2p=all-p2p action=drop log=yes' to do so, but I don't think MikroTik blocks ARES. Is there an update that I can download, or configuration chan...

IP Pools Syntax

I am running PPPoE for my clients. For one set of clients, there are more than 300 users, I want to have them use address ranges: 10.0.1.11-10.0.1.250 and 10.0.2.11-10.0.2.250. What is the syntax for making both of these pools available? The manual has examples for ranges within the same Class C net...

PPPoE Monitor User Traffic

Any suggestions for how to monitor pppoe user traffic per connection? I've got several hundred users connecting, and I want to be able to monitor their traffic usage 24 hours a day and generate reports. I'd really like to get average bandwidth used and maximum bandwidth used per user...

Okay, so for now I won't try to limit connections - too much work. Will other RADIUS systems like FreeRADIUS do this for me? Also, is there any way to get logs or a list of connections from the MikroTik box so I can query it for pppoe connections that have numbers (mulitple connections with the same...

Thanks, but that won't work for me. I will have about 1000 users trying to connect (students) and I'm using a Windows IAS server for RADIUS. So it's just not very practical I guess. Isn't the "only-one" option supposed to allow only one connection if set to "yes"?

Limit PPPoE User Connections

Currently one user may login from multiple computers. I want to limit each pppoe user to one login on the system to stop one user from using their username/password on multiple computers. How can I do this? I've set the one-session-per-host=yes, but that's per host, not for the entire system. Thanks...

I know there are no viruses that scan the whole Internet, I just want to make sure I'm understanding how PPPoE works and that each client goes on its own subnet of 255.255.255.255 and that in order to scan other computers, the client traffic would have to go through the MikroTik router (where I can ...

Thanks, that makes more sense now. PPPoE is working, but I need to clarify something - each client gets an ip and subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 which basically means a subnet of 1 host. In this kind of setup, when a virus like blaster (nachi) or welchia infects a client machine and starts to scan t...

DNS Cache Not Working

Also, my DNS cache isn't working. I read in the 2.7 manual that it had to be enabled, but I can't find any reference to enabling it in 2.8 (what I'm using). Does it need to be enabled in 2.8? Clients connect via PPPoE, but there is no DNS data in the cache.

How are you doing your vlan tagging on your switches? Like I said in my post, I can only get PPPoE queries to work when both the server port and client port are untagged, but I would like to have client ports tagged on different vlans but keep just the one server NIC which means only one switch port...

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255

I've got my clients setup using PPPoE. When they authenticate, they get an address on a class C network, but their computer says they have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255. Does this subnet mean that the computer is on its own little subnet? If so, will a virus like Blaster be able to scan beyond th...

PPPoE and VLANs

I am using a MikroTik Router 2.8 on a college campus. I want to separate traffic based on a VLAN per dormitory floor using switches and have students connect via PPPoE. The switch is a HP 4104gl. Example: switch port a14=ether2 (real) MikroTik, switch port a15=client setting both ports to untagged o...
