RouterOS is upgradable in-place from RAM - update files are not saved on flash.
Say that to hAP lite. :/

maybe because that hap lite uses smips packages which are the smaller (total 7 megabytes aprox )

i think is a good idea to reboot device before upgrade to free ram

take in mind eth1-eth2-eth3-eth4 are on a switch chip, if you are not using the switch chip functionalities is better to use the eth5-eth6-eth7-eth8 which are connected directly to cpu

Backups are only for a given device, with a given ROS version. For all the rest of situations, use exports. yes backup only useful for the same specific device (not only model the same physical device) because carry mac addresses and some other unique values always use export script to copy or move...

i think for heavy lifting a good x86 is better because the single thread performance of for example a 4790k intel cpu at 4ghz has no rival for example for full bgp feed processing x86 will be faster at least until ros7 will do multi threaded bgp in this page there are some test on ccr1072 and ccr103...

hEX will be fine, just take in mind the max throughput of hEX using ipsec will be 20 to 30mbit/s

maybe to ease the routing between branch offices iPiP over iPsec will be better

maybe ccr1009 can cope with your load

but

if you have the budget consider a ccr1036 to have spare CPU power to future grow

ccr1036 its 2.0 X the price of ccr1009 but has 4.0 X the cpu power, CCR1036 have the best performance per dollar ratio of all mikrotik product

i think on CRS a 5-10% cpu usage with no traffic its normal, i think is the cpu used to manage switch features

Did you used external source or built-in tester? external source. the test was very simple, one end a ccr1009 the other end the router under test. 1 pc at lan of each router the test was a copy of a big file between the 2 pc across the tunnel the router under test get 100% cpu usage and cpu profile...

i think the hEX its the better performing "small" router it cost just 60US hEX has better performance than any rb751, rb951 or rb2011, and its gigabit. i think its the better mikrotik to buy before the jump to the newer rb3011 it has at least 2.5 X the hEX performance but costs 3.0 X the hEX i think...

Note: SwOS uses a simple algorithm to ensure TCP/IP communication - it just replies to the same IP and MAC address packet came from. This way there is no need for Default Gateway on the device itself.

yes theoretically at 6mbps you have 32dbm of tx power + 10dbi of antenna gain= 42 dbm = 15848mw EIRP

but at mcs 7 you have 25dbm of tx power + 10dbi of antenna gain= 35dbm = 3162mw EIRP

using horizon you can isolate wired lan from wlan1 and from wlan2 and vice-versa sharing dhcp and lan addressing

i have tested aes-256, aes-128 and 3des on rb951g and hAP lite with ipsec, ipip over ipsec and eoip over ipsec.

openvpn not tested

the better performing was aes-128, second aes-256 and third 3des.
