1 GB Internet Speed not working

Hi, I have 1 GB internet provider, when I connect my computer to the modem/router from my ISP I get up to 700mb/600mb according to speedtest.net, when I set the router to bridge mode and I connect my mikrotik RB951G-2HnD I get no more than 120mb /110 mb, both my mikrotik and router/modem from my ISP have 1 GB ethernet ports. I am not sure if there is something I should enable on my mikrotik to increase the speed

Sounds like you’re stuck at fast Ethernet. Could be you’re adding a CAT cable to make this work that doesn’t have all 8 wires?

Check in Winbox or Webfig to check your connection rate on the ports to ensure they’re negotiating to 1Gbps.

Hi, thanks for you reply, I checked the cables and they are fine, I also checked on the interface and they report 1 GB Rate full Duplex.

I have tried with different DNS providers, or different servers for testing and the max I guet is about 120 mb / 110 mb.

Think about the firewall configuration and try to use fasttrack as much as possible for established and related connection state in forward chain before accepting rule.

well seems like your suggestion improved the speed a lot, not as with the provider’s router but for now its good enough until I found what else to tweak

Have you checked CPU use of the RB951G while doing your tests ?
I think this device can handle Gbps in switching mode, but as soon as you add firewall rules or bridge, it’s another story.

From what i’ve know, Rb951G won’t pass more than 500mbps.

I agree, you will most likely need to step up to a “bigger” router. I, personally, went with a CCR1009. Another thing you will run into, well it will depend on how you use it, is pps ceiling on some routers.

Originally I was using a TP-Link that could hit a little over 700Mbps in speed tests. It could not handle the pps I was throwing at it when I had multiple connections running. With the CCR1009; running NAT and firewall I can easily get 840-920Mbps on speed tests - and that is about as good as you are going to get once you account for ethernet overhead.

You may not need to go with the CCR1009, a more robust router is definitely in order if you wish to take advantage of your ISP speeds.
