2 SERVERS DUAL NIC to RB750G - CONFIGURATION ADVICE NEEDED

Hi,

We are about to deploy a 5 port RB750G as a firewall for NAT mainly. We have two servers with 2 NICs on each on them running web applications, DNS, VPN and filesharing.

I want to use both nics on each server in order to increase performance and fault tolerance.

How Can I achieve this? I was reading about PORT SWITCHING but I’m not sure if is possible with 4 ethernet ports or even if is the right solution for me.

Regards,
Hernán.

Since all the Ethernet interface preforms different roles, the switch will do the job as it gives you the opportunity to manage or configure each port separately.

I don’t know how the servers are linked including their WAN status or configuration, I cannot give any advices as regards the configuration on the switch. But most likely, it will work for you since it is a managed switch.

Hi! thank you for the reply.

Let me explain a little bit more.

ISP ROUTER → RB ETHERNET 1 (WAN)
SERVER1 - NIC 0 → RB ETHERNET 2
SERVER1 - NIC 1 → RB ETHERNET 3
SERVER 2 - NIC 0 → RB ETHERNET 4
SERVER 2 - NIC 1 → RB ETHERNET 5

On each server I will be publishing services using NAT. First, I thought giving each ethernet adaptar a range of IPs (manualy distribute the load) but I was wondering is there is an ‘automatic’ way of doing that.

I was looking at the PORT SWITCH functionality (http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Switch_Chip_Features) but this got me confused:
A ‘master’ port will be the port through which the RouterOS will communicate to all ports in the group. Interfaces for which the ‘master’ port is specified become inactive - no traffic is received on them and no traffic can be sent out.

If I’m gona use this feature, who will be the master and who the slaves?

As mrz said, I don’t understand wanting link redundancy when you’re going to use a single $60 SOHO router. Get a switch that does LACP and use two routers with VRRP, at least. You’re trying to introduce redundancy at the level that least needs it.
