2011 and 3011 questions

Working on configuring a 2011 and a 3011 and had a couple issues/questions:

  1. According to the Switch Chip Features page, both Atheros chips involved support TX rate limiting. However whenever I try to set Egress Rate, I get an error: “rate limiting not supported”. Has that feature been disabled, or am I missing something. I did see in a change log of an older firmware that maybe those features were hidden, but they aren’t hidden in the webfig.

  2. I’m trying to set the sfp and switch chip1 ports as a bridge with a management VLAN and a couple other VLANs. I saw where it was recommended with these chips to do the VLANs in the switch section rather than the bridge section to minimize impact on the cpu. On the 2011, the sfp is included in switch 1, so that’s not a problem. On the 3011, the sfp is not part of the switch chip, so what’s the recommended way to bridge the sfp and ports 1-5 with VLANs and minimize negative impact on the cpu? SFP is a trunk, one management VLAN, ports 1-3 each access ports with a different VLAN.

  1. RB2011 has got 2 different switch chips … the one behind ports ether6-10 is AR8227 and doesn’t support rule table (hence no rate limiting).
    BTW, how did you try to set rate limit, through CLI? I can do it on my RB951G (with AR8327 chip).
  2. For 3011 I guess you can try to configure a “hybrid” solution … configure VLANs on switch chip for ether ports but configure bridge vlan-filtering as well (for bridging ether ports with SFP port). Miracles happen and you might end up with HW accelerated inter-ethernet switching but SFP being part of VLAN setup as well.
    If this doesn’t work out, it might be the best to go with “one bridge per vlan” approach … but it’s going to be complicated …

  1. according to the switch chip features table, the 8227 doesn’t support a rule table, but still does TX limiting. No matter, since I’m interested in ports 1-5 and sfp. I’m trying to set it in Webfig using Switch - Ports - ether1 - Egress Rate. I get the message “rate limiting not supported”. interestingly, if I try Egress Rate on a RB4011, I get the message “vlan mode not supported”, even though I’m not using VLANs on that router. Is it possible on a 2011 to do both VLANs and Egress Rate limiting? I don’t see an option for setting Rate in the Rules section, even though from what I’ve read, it should be there.

  2. thanks, that’s kind of what I was expecting. I’m not going to be doing any heavy lifting on it, so I may just do it the simple way and see how bad a hit the CPU takes.

It seems like webfig is not in sync with CLI with regard to switch-chip rate limiting. I’ve set rate limit in rule section through CLI and webfig knew nothing about it. Attempts to set rate limiting through webfig were futile on my RB951G as well.

Perhaps you could ask support@mikrotik.com about this?
