3 questions about The Dude (errors, email, and multihoming)

Okay, so I got this tool yesterday and it’s not as if the documentation is crystal clear or even complete, so naturally I have a few questions.

  1. Does The Dude support multi-homing? We have several servers that have dual NICs in them on separate subnets. We would like to monitor just one of the subnets, while leaving the other alone.

  2. When defining the email option in the setup for notices, can I specify the ip address of another smtp server that doesn’t belong to me? For instance, if I wanted, could I used google smtp to send email, or do I have to create a gimped little smtp server myself?

  3. I did notice a pretty big error with the software when scanning. I set up a small network to test it out on and two of my XP machines don’t show up on the network. It does recognize the apache server I have running on one of the XPs, but doesn’t actually show it as being a windows computer with the name or anything. And the other xp just doesn’t show up at all. However, it’s able to find my 3rd XP machine, my NT machine, my 2 2000 boxes, and a 2003 server box just fine. So what’s up with that?

  1. I’d say yes, as my devices that work in this manner only show up once on the map, since I don’t have the other IP ranges entered for probe or monitor.

  2. This should work, but may require some additional work on your part. Google server may this as relaying, you check to make sure that they support it.

  3. Dunno. Could be any number of factors involved. Are the security settings on those XP boxes different than the one that was detected?

The two XP machines carry default XP settings. Pretty much the same as all the other machines. The 2003 server has much higher security settings than those XP boxes. So I would expect the xp boxes to show up.

As for your answer to #1, I know I can supply the address range to scan, but will the program still try to activate both cards? There’s a difference between probing for addresses in a certain range and probing for addresses on a certain card.

Actually, I found out why the XP machines didn’t show up. When I installed Dude on the 3rd xp machine it opened it up in windows firewall. So I just disabled windows firewall on the other two machines and they showed up just fine.
