3g connected disconnects Winbox - cant access RB

Hi to all…

I am really new to all of this ,I have just upgraded the rb433 os from ver3.3 to ver4.17 rebooted it and need to update the lic key as it is not valid for the older os and it tells me that it will need to be upgraded again after 70hours if I do not enter the lic key.

I am working from my laptop with Win 7 and with a 3g connection(dongel) for connection to the internet via 8ta as service provider, and the rb is directly connected from the laptops lan port to the POE lanport with an external power supply at the power socket on the rb.

The issue I have is when not connected to internet via 3g Winbox works fine and I can access the RB that is how I did the upgrade of the OS, but now I need to have a internet connection to update the license key, as soon as I start the 3g connection and it is active for internet access Winbox disconnects thus I cannot get access to the RB.

Are there some settings I have to do on the RB before I use the 3g to keep it from disconnecting Winbox? and where?

Thanx

Are you connecting to the routerboard’s MAC address or an IP address from Winbox?

to the mac adress

Put an IP number on the Ethernet interface and connect to it there. The MAC address connectivity is only meant for initial connection and is not reliable under various conditions.

Do I understand correct I must assign an ip to ether1 on the RB…(what range)???

Will this prevent the winbox from disconnecting when connecting with 3g?

Just make sure it is on the same subnet as your PC so you can choose the IP number rather than MAC address in Winbox. You should find that more dependable than a MAC connection.

I have tried a fast of settings last night and to no success did not get it right.

I have set-up on the pc network settings a static ip address with DHCP enabled with the gateway of the RB ip address.
on the RB I have added a route for all traffic to be routed to the gateway’s address.

This I have done on ether1 and all showed that they are reachable.

When not connected with the 3g connection to the internet I can successfully ping the RB and access it through Winbox.
As soon as I start the 3g connection the RB is disconnected and I can not even ping it through cmnd prompt.

I have followed the wiki from how to setup a PTP Link to give me some background but…eish

Can you upload the config? Output from /export compact …

It might also help if you can let the unit connect to 3G then make it disconnect without powering off (e.g. remove USB dongle) - and then look in the log and see which IP range/address the modem is being allocated by the network. Then we can compare that address/range to what you are using on the LAN interface.
