5.0rc9 and USB 3G modem support

Hi,
I have a 493G Routerboard and tried connecting a ZTE MF112 USB 3G dongle to it.
The supported hardware page says that you need v5.x of RouterOS for it to be able to work with that specific dongle. So I upgraded the router from the stock version v4.12 to the latest development version v5.0rc9 … however /system resource usb print still only shows only the following

# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 2:1 RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 1:1 RB400 OHCI 12 Mbps

Is there something I’m missing, because I saw that someone managed to connect it but had problems with the connection.

Any thoughts?

I created the supout.rif file just in case anyone would need it.

Regards
Igor

Edit: probably should have added I have the 3G USB dongle connected through a powered USB hub, since I don’t have the 5V USB Injector (yet).
Could that be the problem?

you need that injector anyway, there must be power between the hub and the board as well

Thanks for the response normis.
I’ll go get one and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Would it be possible to have integrated +5V USB power for new products ?

SXT access point do have it.

SXT is newer than RB493G, isn’t it  ? So why the question ?

I mean for products without antenna like RB4xx

USB 5V injector is hard to find. Most of your reseller don’t have it and even don’t know it does exist.

I needed to add a 5V IC regulator and soldering on a RB493G to get it running.

Thanks again for the help normis.
The ZTE MF112 3G dongle is now working nicely with the 5V USB injector on v5.0rc9.

Hi,

Did you ever get this working? I have the same USB modem running on a 433 board which we cant get working. I found this thread http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/usb-port-invalid/35020/1 which seems to decribe my issue but with our modem the routerboard seems to randomly reboot every 5min

Cheers

Michael

Yeah I got it working.

First hurdle is the version of the RouterOS software … I did it on 5.0rc9 beta software so please check if you have at least 5.0 (considering a stable version just came out update it to that).
The 2nd problem was that I didn’t have a 5V USB power Injector (which apparently only Mikrotik sells).
As soon as I got it, the modem appeared in Resources/USB.

The PPP connection seemed to have been autocreated, but you really need to figure out which channel the data and communication runs through.
In my case both worked when set to the 2nd channel, you might want to try that.
Also had to set the right APN for my provider as well as the number to dial (mine was 99**1#).
After that just enabled the PPP connection and off it went. I was connected almost immediately.

Oh yeah one really stupid thing with this setup. If you unplug the power from the 5V USB power injector (or if you have a crappy power adapter that doesn’t fit) and then plug it back in, the connection will not be reestablished because the modem will not reappear on the router.
I had to actually power-cycle the router and reconnect it only after the router was back up.

Hope it works for you
Igor

thanks for the update. Getting mixed messages from MikroTik. Support say I dont need an injector then they updated the Wiki to say there are power issues.

I have asked them to confirm again. Very confusing.

I may test with a powered USB hub for ease of installation

Oh yeah you’re using the RB411 board right?
I have the RB493 which does not power the USB port and a 5V USB power injector is needed.

my board is a 433

That’s fine … the only board with an unpowered USB is the RB493 so you’re ok.
If you see the modem under System/Resources/USB you should be fine.

ahh OK, I am going to swap the dongle I have with another then. Even when we get this one to pick up the device from a cold boot, as soon as we enable PPP with this dongle connected the router will reboot every 5min or so

And which version of RouterOS are you using?

latest version V5 downloaded and installed today

When trying to add an APC UPS to either a RB493G or a RB411UAHR via the USB port the drop down box only shows the serial0 port and no USB port option. I’ve tried serveral different OS versions and none of them give me the USB port as an option to connect to the APC UPS. I have tried two different APC UPSs and I am using the factory APC USB to RJ45 data cable that comes with every APC ES550 etc.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Brad
