5ghz ptp setup help

Hi Guys,

I have setup a ptp link of 4km, using 5ghz 19dbi Grid antenna. We have clear LOS and we can connect without a problem the connection is stable, but are are not geeting a good through put.

Tx/Rx Rate: 18Mbps/24Mbps
Tx/Rx Signal Strength : -81/-81 dBm
Noise Floor: -106dBm
Signal To Noise: 25dBm
Tx/Rx CCQ: 52/65 %
Overall TX CCQ: 55%
Ack Timeout 47

We have tried aligning the anttena but any changes from here make the signal worse ?
The Main Tower is on top of a hill and the 2nd tower is down in a valley. we are using RH433’s and R52’s at both sides.

Any Help would be appreciated.

the signal is too low, you need -65…-70 for a good connection. You must change antennas or minipci card with something more powerful.

Just to clarify,

we are using 19dbi Grid Antenna,
RouterBoard RB433 &
R52H mini PCI cards… these are high performance cards,

Our link distance is only 4km

Are you in a noisy area? Are you using a clear channel ? Make sure you hit the frequency usage button and and choose a clean channel.
If it’s ok and you still have a low signal strength and a low CCQ rate, my suggestion is to rebuild all the connectors, switch the cables and pigtails. What is the length of you cable connecting your R52h to your antenna? Usually at this distance you should have a very good signal strength. At the end try another pair of R52H cards.

You should try pigtails and another minipci…R52H are not good…read the forum. How long are the pigtails? What channel are you using? etc.

Hi we have swapped the pigtails, and are are using 5825, there is only one other 5hgz network and it’s on 5180,

the cabled that connectes the pigtail to the antenna is about 1m long, we have changes these and still no change.

More information the one antenna is mounter on a power line pole the power lines are about 2-3 meters higher 11000Kva, I have also notice that the one antenna has a telephone pole with telephone lines on it, alomost directly infront of the antenna about 5m away and this same anttena skims over some trees by about 3m-4m about 100m away.

I all sounds quite bad but there is deffinatly LOS.

Can I have some thoughts

When you say you have clear LOS we are expecting clear LOS for the fresnel zone. Now it sounds like you have obstructions at both ends.

I have found that high voltage power lines do interfere with signal and obstructions that are close to the end points are a bigger problem than when they are towards the middle of the link path.

The solution is to move your end points to get clear LOS. While that mighnt not seem like an easy task, it is required for good wireless connections and should have been figured out during your site survey or site engineering plan.

Tom

I noticed the same thing, probably has a lot to do with reflection.

Site Engineering Plan  , funny man you are… to think my partner would have actually done that… the antenna was install on the power pole “illegally” as it turns out, We have a proper 30m Mast which we are waiting for the earth movers to erect. But all this info is good because it means we shall re-think our position. The one side of the link is mounted 2m above a root top with CLEAR LOS the other side is the problem…

Many thanks for the help I shall let you know how it goes.
