7.0.4 Upgrade Path

We received a CCR2004-16G-2S+ this week that shipped with 7.0.4 installed. I’ve seen several people say 7.0.4 is a “special” release that’s not publicly available and therefore you should be careful changing from it. Can anyone tell me at what point I should update this device and to what version?

If I check for updates in package manager on it it offers me:

long-term 6.48.5
stable 6.49
testing 6.49rc2
development 7.1rc5

As I understand it you can’t run anything lower than the shipped version, so the offered v6 firmware won’t install anyway?
Do I just run it as is and wait till the stable or long-term branches catch up? I do actually want to use this in production but I have the feeling I’m being forced to run a beta OS. Some clarification would be much appreciated.

Only update path is 7.1RC5. If memory serves me right, I think I red that the RC version is better (mentioned by someone from MT).

If there are no urgent reasons (read: something REALLY does not work), stay on the version you are now.

7.1rc5 is (though indicated RC as in Release Candidate) to be considered beta for some features.
I have it on most of my devices and for what I use, there is zero downtime (apart from self-inflicted errors).
Local home network, some wifi devices, firewall setup. Nothing too exotic.
I choose to use the ROS7 version for ability to use Wireguard as VPN connection for site-to-site and road warrior configs (easier to setup).

Presumably there will be some fixes between now and a stable release of v7 that might benefit this piece of hardware?

Seems there’s no path for that to happen, just wait for v7.* stable? (Assuming I don’t want to run a development release)

Again, your own choice.
For me it runs stable.
I have read reports of others having quite some issues with it (in domains I don’t use).

I could suggest to go for it and see what it gives. Downgrade if needed but I am not sure how that’s going to work out with this special 7.0.4 release.
Do a search in the Routeros V7 Beta section. I see quite some references to CCR2004, positive and negative.

Be advised though once you move from your current version to 7.something, there WILL be some config changes to address in some sections if you use those.
(the advanced routing related stuff). Could be another reason to bite the bullet already now, since you have not setup anything yet ?

Still got some devices with a client running on 6.48.3. I am VERY reluctant to move those to LT 6.48.5 or stable 6.49 with all messages I see coming for those versions.
7.1rc5 is also out of the question. Don’t need the new features and things work as they are. So I’m not touching them.
Personally, for a production environment, I would not change if not needed.

upgrade to 7.0.5

I know this is dumb. But how exactly?

You either stay with 7.04 or upgrade to 7.1rc5 ….. 7.05 is not available to you.
