802.11a Link

Background:

routerboard on roof with prisim 802.11b running hotspot and a atioth 802.11a link to the tower on nearby hill.

The 802.11a card on the tower is the ap running omni direction 8dbi antani. Both 802.11b links are omni 15db.

Desire:

To setup another relay same setup as above. Purchaced a rb500 with two atioth a/b/g cards. Programed the unit up and 802.11b works fine never could get a back-haul connection on 802.11a. After two months gave up bought a oldver version of routerboard, upgraded it’s license. Has a prisim and atioth a card in it.

Same issue. Inside our office with single pain glass no tint could not connect. I did some testing outside same result. Today however I moved yet another antani outside

And finally got a weak conneciton of -89. This is the same distance from the roof antani with a signal strenth of -77.

And this unit that I am working on needs to go another 3 miles away ontop of another mountain top.

So what am I doing wrong? I can connect to the 802.11b link from inside my office showroom and get like -65 connections.

Hi Michael,

I think you have problems with your cabels or antennas.
Im running 10 Km link with 2 pcs of RB532 Level 4 licens.
And with Atheros CM9 cards and the antennas are Grid antennas 26 Dbi.
the signal is -58 and i can lock the MT on 56 Mbit.
And the ping time is 1-2 ms.
And if i try the same link with 2 Pcs of Mikrotik Flatpanel antennas 23 Dbi i get signal -68

Note The band is 5 Ghz…

Could the problem being that I’m using a omni 8dbi at the tower?

Have you ever changed the pigtail?
I had similar problems. In my case the pigtails which seems not to be for 5.8 GHz
has a loss of 15-20 dmb (each site!!!) they were N-type pigtails

Now I have received sma pigtails and I have christmas time …

Now I’'m expecting other n-type pigtails and hope this will go better…

I’ll bet if you put it higher it would work… Omnis arent that good if you arent on level…

Just my input.. Maybe add another card and a directional antenna at the tower..

Hi from Wireless Works - Australia
we got same problem we cannot believe that there is pigtails for 2.4 GHz
and for 5.8GHz!
what is the difference between pigtails?
we need to have N-type to connect to panel antenna.
Please help
