When I set my routerboard 500 for 802,11g my laptop no longer sees the router. The laptop is G capable so is there something else I need to change in the routerboard? It works fine on 802.11b but the range is not very good. What would I change the settings to for furthest possible range using a 2.4 ghz card?
You’ll usually have worse range with 802.11g compared to 802.11b, this is due to worse receiver sensitivity on G, at least 5db less @ 6Mbps. If you get more than 100 metres on a basic Laptop you’ll be lucky. That’s at UK power levels, I guess in the US with limits 40 times higher you probably get better range.
I’ve used a Senao 2511CD-PLUS-EXT PCMCIA card that has external antennae sockets with an external 5db antenna. This is only 802.11b, but it will work up to 2.5Km with clear line of sight.
