802.1x on wired

Is it possible to use 802.1x authentication on Mikrotik wired networks?

If so has anyone here used/deployed a solution that works with this previously?

Edit: this was supposed to go in the general area but ended up in the wireless area accidentally, if a mod wishes to move it please go ahead.

nothig ?

It is not supported by RouterOS on wired or wireless interfaces.

Of course the router also will not interfere with traffic between a supplicant, authenticator and authentication server unless you tell it to - it just cannot be any of the three itself. So, for example, if you’re looking to deploy switches that talk dot1x there shouldn’t be any issue at all.

fewi,

Maybe if I explain you my intention you and anothers mates can help me to find a way or a better way to do.

I’m planning to deploy RouterOS/RB 493 inside some buildings in my city. The RouterOS may be act like a switch/bridge, connecting the internal devices to the external network.

Of course I could do that using switches, but I’m looking for something using RouterOS that fill the follows:

    • Be secure - If a stranger plug a cable in RJ45 connector this not compromise security
  • No static - a way to remote control allowed users that can really connect

My first intention was use RouterOS with 802.1x on wired ports, but according you and others I cant do that because it isnt supported.

Thanks

Yes, if the RJ45 plus directly into RouterOS you cannot do 802.1x.

Still no intention to do it?

While many admins may be afraid of using Mikrotik in the core of their networks, I think this could boost the sales of the equipment as cheap edge switches.

I’d be interested in this as well. Particularly useful on the CRS which I am using as edge switches.
