A little question about VPN work

I have been trying to figure out how exactly a VPN works. It is very hard to understand how blogs and sites explain about it. Can anyone give me a simpler description?

Imagine that the useful data is you. And VPN is an underground tunnel. In a normal situation, you can not cross the road, because it will forbid you to traffic rules and an impassable number of different cars. But if you use an underground tunnel, you’ll end up on the other side of the street and no one will understand or notice how you got there. However, you will be able to get where you wanted.

Any VPN is a dedicated secure communication channel inside an already existing unprotected one. And no one can peek into it. And users of such channel can break rules of a wide area network - to communicate with each other routed private networks and even to unite computers in one local area network.
