Hi everyone
I have a home network using a home router provided by my isp and basic knowledge of home networking
as my networking needs increased and my home devices increased I thought the time has come to improve my network and have better devices but I have a limited budget
My network consists of wired and wireless devices
wired devices 2 Smart TVs 2 PCs “one of them is home server running windows 7 24/7 as plex server and torrent downloading client and nas” 1 Network attached Hard drive 1 printer attached to the home server pc that needs to be shared over the network
Wifi devices 3 laptops 4 android devices 2 ios devices 1 wifi printer
What I need in my network
-gigabit wired connections
-Wifi covering the whole apartment with at least n600
-Guest wifi with internet access only with separate password and dhcp enabled for guest wifif
-home wifi with static ip “local” with internet acess and sharing files
-Home network with static ip “local” with internet acess and sharing files
-Prioritize voice and video calls in both home and guest networks via facebook messenger and whatsapp and other chatting apps
-Prioritize browsing in both guest and home networks
-Prioritize tv internet connection
-Use of vpn for both home and guest networks “i mean inserting my vpn credentials in the router itself not separately on each device”
-Apps used mostly facebook messenger whatsapp
Plex in home network bittorrent IDM sonarr couch potato antivirus eset internet security
What I mostly use my network for
streaming media files across the local network mostly and internet access with calls and streaming sites as netflix and youtube
The budget part
I have enough money to buy Mikrotik RB750GL and I have a tp link 8 port gigabit unmanaged switch so plz recommend a good wireless access point to work with this setup or a whole new setup
Is this possible with mikrotik and Can I do it by myself?
What parts i need to procure to have optimum network for my needs?
It will do all the routing, vpn and wifi you need for the apartment.
The only problem is that you have some devices that clearly need to be directly connected to the router and its not clear how they are spread out.
In other words you have a unmanaged switch for a reason and I am thinking you may need a managed switch??
Thank you for your reply and your time
I need 8 gigabit ports to future proof my network
I need another access point to cover the whole apartment
Please suggest a switch either managed or unmanged and an acess point that work well with the suggested router
Thank you for your advice and time
Hap ac2 seems to have wifi issues so i thought to have it and buy a ubuiquiti ap
what do u think of this setup and will it give me all what i need concerning wireless?
How big is your apartment, and how many rooms and where would the router be located and is there ethernet wiring in the apartment such that you have wired access throughout?
Again I ask if all devices, that need ethernet will be co-located with the router or spread out…
The apartment is 200 meter square
3 rooms
The router is in the outer one third of the apartment
The wired connections are spread out but their connections are ready
The wired switch will be beside the router for the number of ports only
Lots of options,
I dont think that 5Ghz will penetrate sufficiently across the entire apartment but I dont know how many walls are involved and their structural makeup. Remember the small wifi in smart phones has to also be part of the equation of reach etc…
I think that 2Ghz will penetrate sufficiently across the entire apartment and the key for this network will be to pick a channel that doesn’t clash with neighbours.
Have you done any kind of survey to find out how many other Access Points are visible in your three sections and what their strenghts are in -dBs??
In terms of equipment, the RB4011 should suffice for a long time as it has enough ports, enough CPU power and features and ample WIFI capabilities.
I would try that first and then see if the wifi is acceptable or not at the most distance locations. After tweaking the wifi that is, there are many settings to work out.
If the wifi is crappy on the far side you could, down the road, get a CapAC access point for the farthest location.
