About Router OS Installation in x86

Hello,

I tried to install routerOS in following supermicro machine. But it’s not installing.

Board : SuperMicro X9SRE/X9SRE-3F /X9SRi/X9SRi-3F
CPU : Intel Xeon E5-1620v2 3.70GHz
Memory : 32GB/64GB DDR3 1600MHz
HDD : 3x160 SSD Intel DC S3500 / 2x2TB HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 SATA3

I tried by 3 version 4.17, 5.26 and 6.25. by 6.25v machine continuously rebooting. And 4.17 and 5.26 machine booting properly and showing Ready. But no further installation progress. Any one please advice me ? Attached have bios and 4.17 and 5.26 booting screen shot. Thank you.

Wow. Talk about overkill…

Even if RouterOS installed successfully here, it can’t control more than… I’ve been told 1.5GB… And the x86 architecture only allows for up to 3.5GB anyway, so this jewel of a machine will be wasted.

I suggest you install a “normal” x64 Linux distribution on this (say, Ubuntu), and then install RouterOS as a VM with 2GB allocated for it (or 4GB, if it turns out earlier reports are not true; I haven’t checked for myself), and then bridge all Ethernet adapters on the VM (so that the router can actually route).

Anything non-router related you may need, you install right on the host OS, and if you want to use it primarily as a router - allocate all but one CPU cores to the VM for maximum efficiency, and turn on any virtualization hardware acceleration features that this baby supports.
