Maybe a strange question for this forum but nevertheless, it can be of use to us all:
I am in the process of buying a new laptop or tablet for usage as work device to check my routers and CPE’s in the field in the event I have issues I can’t solve remotely.
It needs an Ethernet port for local access. Wireless is not always an option. Most tablets don’t have an E-interface. And a serial for nulmodem is hard to find in nowadays hardware.
The wireless part has to support all 802.11a/b/g/n modes.
The screen has to be 10" and readable in full sunlight. Most Laptops are a nightmare when it comes to use them outdoors in the sun.
Anybody with a recommended device that would come to my terms for reasonable price?
I’ve been looking for the same thing for ages!
My biggest stumbling block is the display - I have yet to find one that is usable in sunlight.
What I’ve done is utilise an old laptop (Acer 12" running Win XP), and used the PCMCIA slot for the wireless card. It’s enough for all the usual stuff, winbox, ssh, etc.
Ethernet is 10mb but enough to get to the routerboard. Serial is onboard. But I am now having serious problems with the battery (max 25mins) and can’t find a replacement so I’m not too sure you want to go the way I did
