Advice on changing the fans on CRS510-8XS-2XQ-IN

Hi, I have recently acquired a CRS510-8XS-2XQ-IN switch. The 2 fans on the switch are a little loud for in-home use. I have taken pictures of the fans in the device (attached to this post).

The original fans on the device seem to be this one: https://www.digikey.ee/en/products/detail/delta-electronics/EFB0412HD-F00/2560520

  • Dimensions: 40x40x20 mm
  • Wires: 3-pin
  • 12V, 0.12A
  • RPM: 7600 RPM
  • Air Flow: 8.54CFM (14.52 m3/h)

I found two Noctua fans that are the same size:

(I understand that the airflow of the Noctua fans are less than the original fans.)

Question:

  • Do I have to use the 3-pin fan?
  • Or if I use the 4-pin fan the board is able to leverage the PWM feature of the fan?
  • Do you know of any other fans that could be a better choice?

I used NF-A4x20 FLX.

Case closed.

just in case

Keep an eye on qsfp module temperature

Did anyone try to install 4 Noctua fans with Y-splitter cable instead of 2 ?

They are too noisy for in-house use

Just thinking the DIY way … laptop’s radiators are very thin so they can fit horizontally in the chasis so mount it on SFP elements and let the fan cool the ASIC radiator. Any recycled radiator could be used but the more thermal pads you have to apply to SFP cages, the better.
