i love serial console, i really do. i also appreciate you went into the rj45 shaped connector in your recent devices..
however nowadays no portable computers have serial by default.
i know, using an usb2serial cable the problem is more or less solved, but all those cables are
bulky, have a DB9 on the other end…
cisco started to install usb consoles to their switches, next to the serial port. only one of them is active at a time.
it’s not like some sort of rocket science, they just put an ordinary usb-to-rs232 inside of the device.
so as soon you connect your gear, it will pop up as a serial port, and you are good to go.
you could do the same using a very basic prolific pl2303 chip, which is supported by every os out there.
i don’t think it will significantly increase the price of the devices…
