I need to create link between my house and garage and I’m unable to pull cable so I decided to explore possibility for wireless link and on Mikrotik web site I found this: https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire
Problem is, one antenna will probably be inside so antennas will be separated by brick wall and this is 60 GHz product so… I’m not a expert but 60GHz could have a problem with this wall ?
What are your suggestions ?
Distance between house and garage is maybe 15 meters.
Problem is that at the moment there is no way to pull cable outside of the house, and in that case, when cable it’s outside I would just run it to the garage, there would be no need for wireless link.
Unfortunately, RF signals do not conform to “what would be more convenient” wishes…
Over such a short distance, it may work with 2.4 GHz equipment. Depending on what type of wall it actually is.
I have another option that I just thought off, i have CAT6 cable that was used for phone line coming from the roof to the small network distribution box, I can use that an then i can use wireless wire.
EDIT: is it possible to send multiple VLANs thought that wireless wire ?
Bought wireless wire, right now they are inside, I wanted to play a little bit, change default IP address because I don’t use default Mikrotik addresses and next week I will put them to work.
They are on ROS 6.48.6, should I leave them at that version ?
With those devices, do NOT upgrade the software before searching the forum for problems with 60 GHz.
There are several reports of things becoming worse after upgrade, but I have no overview as I do not have one of those myself.
It is not specifically a v7 problem, the problem occurred within v6 already.
Regarding VLANs, setup is same as the ROS7 or there are some differences ?
You may not need to setup VLANs at all, at least not when the untagged VLAN is your management VLAN for the Wireless Wire.
First try it without, it should just be transparent for VLANs. You can always mess with VLAN config later.
I will try when i get back home on monday. Mgmt/trusted VLAN is untagged, other VLAN is tagged (for IoT).
I tested internet speed with this setup and it really is like a wire, ping and speed are the same as wired connection. For now I don’t have any problems.
One thing that is bothering me is if something go wrong (aka i do something wrong) when i reset to factory configuration are devices still connected ? Or is in that case needed to configure both devices manually
