Yes, it is possible.
Client interface (mode=station), that does not support WDS, can connect to AP with enabled WDS. (Appropriate configuration should be on both ends, of course WDS link is not established between them).
I think like this:
AP-WDS methode with mode: ap-bridge on site and Station methode mode: station-wds at other site, it will transparant network mode
