APC UPS Simple vs. Smart Signaling

I don’t know all the technical differences between the APC “Simple” vs. “Smart” signaling; but is it, or will it, be possible for the RouterOS to support the “Simple” signaling? I know it currently support the “Smart” signaling. The newer APC UPSs that you can buy almost anywhere mainly support “Simple”. I have been buying the BX1500 from Staples, and they run the sites for about 2 hrs. If I can get the site to notify me of an outage, I can get a generator out there to keep it up. I have been plugging in extra devices (that are pingable) to just get a heartbeat. If I lose ping to it, I assume the power is out. Isn’t that basically what the “Simple” does is notify 1. when it is on battery and 2. when the battery is low?

Thanks,

Eric

Hook a MT ethernet port into a DPDT relay so it loops the ethernet transmit to the receive when the power goes out. The relay would be powered by a wall wart not on the UPS. Monitor the ethernet up/down status with snmp or a script.
