The command in Winbox under System/License called ‘Update License’.
How do I invoke that from API or terminal? I cannot seem to find it.
Thanks
Ekkas
You cannot. Winbox is the only way to update a license.
Maybe MikroTik could rethink this approach in a future release. There are sites out there that do not use Windows machines (I am one).
I suppose it is also because the license is retrieved by the PC running Winbox, not the RB itself, which is a good thing. Meaning you can log into a RB via MAC address without any config and still do the license upgrade.
You mean nowhere on your network you have a Windows PC? You are a model cyber-citizen! Keep up the good work! ![]()

WinBox works with Wine flawlessly
That’s good to know – however, Wine itself does not work on PowerPC machines. ![]()
on maxosx you have darwine what basically is wine port for that closed platform.
and there winbox works with some quirks (fonts show some weird symbols sometimes) the rest works same as on linux.
For several years MT staff use Linux +wine combination to run winbox themselves to point when winbox did run flawlessly on linux+ wine but had some weird behaviour in native habitat ![]()
ok, in linux dragging files in files tab does not work… well “big deal” i say and use scp/ftp
Thank you, I understand this, but again, none of this works on PowerPC machines.
When rural WISP business pays better I will be able to upgrade to an Intel unit. ![]()
I’m pretty sure darwine runs on PPC. Unlike wine it actually is an emulator using qemu.
After a wasted half day rebuilding all my macports, it appears I was right the first time.
Darwine ppc-0.9.27 Read Me
Important Warning: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN WINDOWS APPLICATIONS (.exe’s) USING USING THIS RELEASE ON POWERPC HARDWARE .
I’m sorry I didn’t see this earlier. Yes, Darwine works only on Intel mac
