We have just installed a new 5.8Ghz point to multipoint setup but are very disappointed with the results we are getting. Here is the spec:
This is all MT out of the box. MT 230 routerboard with Atheros AR5211 at both ends. AP is on a 40m tower with 13dBi MT omni - client has 21dBi flat panel. All pigtails, cables & connectors are Mikrotik.
Distance is 5.3km. Clear LOS - clear fresnel zone. We are connected at -82dBm with an indicated maximum speed of 21mbps.
At 7kms signal drops off completely but 2.4 Prism card on same AP is going strong. Surely 5Ghz kit should perform better than this?!
My guess is that the problem lies with the omni antenna. To get this much gain at this frequency, the vertial pattern in that thing must be extrememly narrow. If you are even slighly above or below the peak, your signal will drop dramtically. I would have expected a better rec sig than you are getting.
this definitely should be hardware related problems, something like omni antenna issues (interference lowers throughput and omni is very good at this!), bad pigtails etc, etc.
