are 10pcs ADSL 8Mbps(DL) 512kbps(UL) enough for 350 students?
i am designing a network for 350 students hostel, are 10pcs ADSL 8Mbps(DL) 512kbps(UL) enough for 350 students using a mikrotik router?

At first I was inclined to reply that 80Mbps/5Mbps would be plenty for 350 users in a student environment, then I caught the hostel part and am not so certain. The 80Mbps down would probably be acceptable, the 5Mbps upload seems rather low. If symmetrical is not required, I would look for download to upload ratio of 20%.

It really depends on your configuration. If you were to block access to streaming video sites, you should be fine. What are typical residential connection speeds in your locality?

this is the highest speed that our ISP provided…Zzz…we are not going to block anythings. so don’t 5mbps upload speed is enough or not..

Only you can really answer that question. Consider the following thoughts/rhetorical questions:

  • With more services being offered (even free) in the cloud, upload is becoming just as important as download since the data must be presented on the viewers side, but processed on the server side.
TCP sends confirmation packets for everything received to acknowledge that it received delivery, we see about 20% upload for every bit of download due to this overhead as well as normal upload traffic
A good quality VoIP call is 100Kbps, bi-directional
How often and at what times do you/your friends/your family/known acquaintances stream video (most users will concurrently be streaming whenever their neighbors are, as in set times throughout the day like evenings)?
A video stream is a minimum of .5Mbps to 2Mbps download, depending on quality
As previously asked, what is your home internet connection speed?

If you can accept that 20% upload is the norm, 25Mbs of download traffic will likely saturate your upload capacity of 5Mbps, resulting in no more download capability (a waste of 69% of your download capacity). Calculating the maximum demand as evening video streaming time, your 25Mbps of download will only get you a maximum of 50 continuous streams, which is 1 out of every 7 students streaming video and 6 out of every 7 students doing nothing online at that time.

Can you get a leased line or more ADSL lines to increase upload capacity while simultaneously cutting cost by reducing the download capacity (i.e 16x 3M/512K or 12x 4M/768K lines). I can say with some experience that 400 users in one of the local residential networks consumed an average of 80Mbps/16Mbps when I last examined it TWO YEARS AGO.
