Ax3 weak wifi signal/range and wifi6

Hi,
so far I have Hap Ac2 without external antennas
now I bought Hap Ax3 with two external antennas and unfortunately this new router has a worse wifi range, both 2Ghz and 5Ghz.
The old router had networks in N and of course I configured AX networks (wifi6) on the new one.
and unfortunately the wifi range is much smaller and does not cover the entire house.
Ac2 easily covered the entire house and some of the yard.
When I change the channel to the N network on Ax3, the range improves, but it is still slightly higher than Ac2.

Tested on 7.13.2 and 7.14beta8 programming.

Is this a problem with the router or antennas? Does band Ax have a shorter range than the older band N?

Possibly what else to configure on Ax3 to improve the WiFi range.

Here is my wifi configuration:

Check this topic:
http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/hap-ax3-wireless-problem/172468/1

  1. Check that bridge protocol-mode=rtsp
  2. Check info about your country’s regulations: /interface/wifiwave2/radio/reg-info country=“Yourcountry” number=0
  3. Set 5GHz frequency to 5500 and check if signal got better

ad 1) I had and still have it established

ad 2)
/interface/wifiwave2/radio/reg-info country=“Poland” number=0
ranges: 2402-2482/20
5170-5250/23/indoor
5250-5330/23/indoor/dfs
5490-5730/30/dfs
5735-5875/14

ad 3) I set it and I don’t see much improvement
it may be that the 5Ghz network has improved a bit, but the 2Ghz network is still much weaker than on the old Ac2, both routers are placed next to each other

Hi,
should I understand that it is impossible to solve the problem with wifi coverage on hap Ax3?

Still have problem with my xiaomi box and my xiaomi tablet and mikrotik wifi 6 any idea ?

Wireless performance is subject to hardware problems, software misconfiguration, noisy neighbors and constantly saturated radio frequency channels impacting one another. Higher frequency 5GHz has lower penetration than 2.4GHz but higher frequencis are generally less crowded. Do you want stable signal with no drops or unstable signal that is frequently disconnected? Or do you want stable and performant? How do you measure that change you made helped? How do you detect when a neighbor filled up radio frequency that was previously unused?

Mikrotik is high spec hardware with very low spec antennas. These cheap antennas make flagship wireless access points perform so bad that people give up. But investing in good antennas can solve problem better you can expect. At least it did for me. I almost gave up but talking to Mikrotik support, Antennas manufacture support and browsing the forum I found out what to do. An antenna can be high quality or low quality. An antenna placement can be good or can be very bad.

Before taking any advice on tuning wireless performance via software make sure you invest in 1) monitoring, 2) decent antenna, 3) thermal upgrade. No software tweaks can help to overcome inferior built-in antenna. It’s too suboptimal to work well no matter how you configure the driver. If you decide not to upgrade antenna, make sure it’s fully attached to the socket, as plug is flimsy.

Before 7.19.2 (when wireless driver was finally fixed) I was able to get stable wireless signal. I described all steps that helped to achieve good wireless performance on my AX^3 in every detail hAP AX^3 wireless performance journey . Based on my monitoring system results the version 7.19.4 is the best so far, still waiting to upgrade to 7.20.

To be fair, in your (BTW very nice :+1:) report, details on how exactly you enhanced cooling are completley missing, there is only a vague reference to:

... reduce number of thermal pads and paste, then CPU temperature went up to +72C under bandwidth load, I was very happy to see and continued working on thermal upgrade until it reached steady temperature without load and gradually increasing temperature under bandwidth test load ...

This was lengthy 3-days process of trial and error. The goal was to make sure thermal throttling isn’t a problem.

I went through disassembling, replacing thermal pads and paste, measuring thermal under load every time. Factory thermal setup wasn’t good enough, thermal pads covered only a portion of a surface.

So, essentially, you put larger thermal pads to completely cover the heating surfaces, thus increasing the transmission of heat to the dissipator(s)?

yes, exactly, to make sure there isn’t overheating that may cause throttling under heavy benchmark load but higher spec antennas is what I needed the most to solve the problem with radio signal transmission

Yep, the antenna change part is clear.

Cannot say if there is such an advantage using a single antenna with 2x2 conneciton over two separate antennas or even using the Mikrotik antennas with an extension cable to place them outside the rack.
It is very difficult to find comparison of different antennas and their real world capabilities.

Which thickness are the thermal pad you used?

Using stock antennas with an extension cable could be an option but only for placement, not for signal strength. To be honest an antenna with cables weren’t much expensive than cable extension, so choice wasn’t too difficult to make.

Thermal pads I used were Gelid Solutions GP-Ultimate - Thermal Pad 90x50x1.0mm (2pcs). It doesn’t matter the brand as long as you can stack few pieces one to another in some areas, so an excessive heat can dissipate rather than accumulate in one place.

I tried everything I know and still have problem im using 2 wap ax and 1 cap ax2 and have disconnection from my xiaomi box 2nd gen. I tried everything I know and still have problem im using 2 wap ax and 1 cap ax2 and have disconnection from my xiaomi box 2nd gen.

Have you tried to measure radio signal strength per each device that experiences it? Is it stable? Is it changing under the load? Is any component of the router overheating? Are both antennas positioned correctly? How do they position at the moment?

Even disabling the ft still have problems i trie version 7.19 7.20 7.21 beta and all of them my samsung galaxy s23 ultra and xiaomi box random disconnect from network logs show nothing im desperated.

If logs show nothing why do you make a conclusion the problem is with the access point? Does the problem persist if you find less crowded frequency in a given time? Does the problem occur only to few devices? What happen to the other devices? What radio frequency are they on? How many devices connect to the access point? Do they often jump from 2.4GHz to 5Ghz? Does your 5GHz interface have higher Tx Power than 2.4GHz to compensate for shorter length wave? Have you tried to bind specific frequency to impacted devices via Wifi - Access List - Interface so they don’t jump while radio signal change?

Everyone told me to buy ubiquiti but i was dumb and bought mikrotik because my main router was mikrotik.

Opinions are subjective. You don’t have to use Mikrotik access point if you don’t want to but if you do such problems are solvable, alternative vendors may have better stock antennas, antennas placement or better thermal setup. The first step to solving the problem is to collect the data from sensors: radio signal strength per device and temperature sensors.

Here is my config

Configuration is incomplete, also this format is unreadable, can you share it in a way so no horizontall scrolling needed to analyze it please?

Here you have the configuration complete of the wifi the temperature are good devices are near the ap so signal strengh are also good
