Basic router setup, with VPN for 2 locations

Hi there,

Im completely new to MikroTik, done some networking, and would say im beginner in this type of networking, so i need a help with setting up this router.

I have two 450G router boards with cases, and what i need to set up is the following:

  • i have 2 locations (Manhattan, and Brooklyn stores), and i need to set up both routers to first just let the internet connection go onto the unmanaged switch that is sharing the internet connection to other computers. i have Time warner with a static IP on both locations.

  • i need to set up a VPN so that i can remotely mount one of the network drives from 1st location to the 2nd, since both locations have to use the file that is in one place.

I have seen some tutorials online, and some manuals, but haven`t been able to even get the router to let the switch get on the internet properly.

Any help would be grately appreciated.

Welcome!

With power comes complexity. RouterOS is not something you can just dive into straight away. It can however do some cool stuff.

I am no expert but I have done similar to what you are asking.

Get thee to gregsowell.com and have a look at his videos. He has some on VPN/PPTP etc. Have a look around for tutorials on EOIP as that may help with mounting of windows shares etc. I confess a bit of ignorance in this matter.

Which device did TWC provide? If their modem can be placed in bridge mode you can take the static IP directly on the routerboard which makes VPN options easier.
